Definition
A sore throat is a painful, dry or scratching discomfort feeling in the throat. It can be due to inflammation of the tissues that made up throat region which include the pharynx, larynx and tonsils.
Symptoms
Symptoms sometimes depend on the etiology (causes) and these include
- Burning sensation
- Dryness
- Irritation and Discomfort
- Scratchy throat
- Coarseness of voice due to inflammation of voice box (larynx)
- Trouble in swallowing and loss of appetite especially in paediatric patients
- Cough, fever, running nose, sneezing
- Body aches, headaches among others.
Causes
Sore throat is mostly caused by viruses and sometimes bacteria.
It should as well be noted that sore throat can be symptoms of other systemic conditions or even underlying chronic conditions in such a person
It can be caused measles virus, chickenpox virus, bacteria (streptococcus)
It should as well be noted that sexually transmitted infections can cause sore throat as a symptom of such sexual infection
Other causes include
Allergy such as exposure to dusty environment, inhalation and so on.

Tumor
Risk factors
Age
Especially in children as they are more susceptible to sore throat than adults. Due to rough plays in dirty environment.
Time of the year (especially due to dry air in harmattan period)
Exposure to irritatants
Vocal strain
Dusty environment
Air-borne infection
Occupational hazards such as factory workers who are exposed to chemicals, smokes and
fumes from combustion tubes.
Preventions
Actually, we cannot totally avoid the sore throat infection since it could be easily be triggered simply from just inhaling a smoke in any environment we might found ourselves in.
Nevertheless, there are some measures that could be employed so to lessen its occurrence such as adequate personal hygiene which includes thorough cleaning of the hands since it is from the hand that we use took what we ingest through the mouth which will eventually pass through the throat.
In a nutshell, hand cleaning is very germane in preventing most infections including sore throats
Likewise, we should limit close contact with people who have respiratory tract infections that could be spread around and contracted through the air such as pulmonary tuberculosis.
Also, people with sneezing, cough , running nose are could have a symptoms of sore throat and are mostly caused by viruses and can be easily be contracted from people who are already infected.
Moreso, avoiding smoking cigarettes 🚭 during the infection till it resolves if the person is a habitual smoker and also quit gatherings that has smokers and industrial areas with heavy smoke discharge from engines.
In conclusion, avoiding exposure to cold is very important by maintaining body temperature with appropriate clothing. So these are the ways to prevent sore throat at least to some extent.
