You are a student. You study and when you have exams, how do you feel? It's ok, you will do well. Some students are under a lot of stress and fear that does not let them do well in the exam.
So what happens in a fight? Fighters train to fight. If it is a fighting competition, you know when this is going to happen and who will fight against you. Still, you feel a certain level of stress. The level of stress can be so little that does not have any effect on you. Instead, you are excited about it. Or, you can be under stress that can affect your performance in a fight negatively.
It becomes worse when you fight for self-defense. If it is a surprise attack, you have no idea that you are going to be attacked. When you realize that, you are already in front of the attackers. In a normal situation, you can fight well. But when you actually face a situation like this, things can change. You might not make your move that you can easily do in a normal situation.
In one of my recent posts, I wrote about what you can do if someone attacks you with a cricket bat. I also shared a video link about what possible action you can take in a situation like that. In a demonstration or just to practice, you can do a lot of things. If you have any experience of dealing with a situation like this, you know how it feels.
You do not want to give any chance to the attacker to attack you. So doing a back kick exposing your back to the attacker while he has a stick will not something you would like to do in that situation. You may feel stress and fear. And you will make those moves that are direct, simple, and very effective to defend yourself.
If you find any way to avoid the fight, by all means, you should do so. If there is no way to get out of there, you should make your move immediately to protect yourself. The longer you wait, the worse the situation can be and you will find it more difficult to protect yourself.
