Charak Puja is one of the most important folk festivals of rural Bengali Hindus in India and Bangladesh. This puja is performed on the last day of Chaitra i.e. Chaitra Sankranti. It is appropriate to call Charak a folk festival,Puranas like the Brahmavaivartapurana mention dance songs in the context of Shivaradhana in the month of Chaitra, but there is no mention of Charak Puja. It is said that a king named Sundarananda Tagore introduced this puja in 1475 AD. The practice is very rare among the so-called upper castes, but it has been practiced since ancient times among the Shaivite community called Pashupatinath. Month-long fasting and various forms of physical torture are considered part of the religion in this festival.Entrepreneurs travel around the region with a team of a few. Shiva and Gauri are in the team. Occasionally there are Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartikeya, Ganapati, Asura and Durga Bahan, Singharaj and Dal, who dance to the tune of Shiva devotional songs. In Charakgache, the devotee or monk is tied to the wheel with an iron latch and rotated quickly.
