Observation vs Judgement: The difference....

There is a good saying "How we Judge Others Is How We Judge Ourselves"
Is it possible that we only observe and not judge?
To an extent yes I do believe that we make fast conclusions on judging people based on our own behavior and actions. Our instincts are very instant, it is not common that we pause and just observe. External factors are always controlling our thoughts and behavior, and the curiosity builds it up. So we get into judging and forming opinions based on the outer appearance of people and things i.e. body language and behavior. We relate the same with our's and do not shy off to make judgments.
Can we maintain neutrality by just observing people, situations and not form any opinions? Difficult but not that hard also.

Why is it so difficult to not judge someone and just be Observant by maintaining neutrality?

  • The 2 sides of the brain is always at play. The Logical and Illogical, where the logical one is always trying to make sense of everything and the illogical does not really care. Both of these are working simultaneously, one what we can see in real in front of us and one where we are relating it with our own experience and behavior. When the illogical brain is at work, the sub-conscious is majorly at play.
Can we avoid this? To a great extent yes, but may be completely; than I will say No. But as far as our judgement does not harm anyone and it is just for our mind tricks then it is fine. The moment judgement becomes a topic of discussion that is where it is harmful and a destructive pattern for our own self. Now which side of our Brain is more active will decide how judgmental we are and up to what extent can we maintain that curiosity and neutrality and just be an observer.

  • If we observe our ownself, we will know that we ourselves carry some pattern. If we observe that our pattern of making judgement is similar that is either a constant positive or a constant critical one then definitely we are judging the person based on our own values and our own character.
If we have our own patterns, then we may end up always judging critically or always in a positive manner, but to look at it, both are not good. Judging all the time positively may sometimes make you miss out on someone's malicious intentions, but because of our own values and character we do not see wrong in them. Hence it is important that we make observations with our own patterns first, once we understand our own traits it is much easier to control our judgmental behavior. Then we will also be able to become just a spectator.

  • Is there a Value in Judging? If we notice our own patterns and understand then we can ask this question to our own self, that is there a value in making judgement, and what is the need for it. Judgement only make us cloud up in our minds, if we can break these patterns we can be more free in our mind and also be able to look at people and things as is.

Most of the time making judgement is nothing but an ego gratification. So it is always better to let our emotions, reactions be in our control. The middle road approach is the best one. Our attitude is set by the state of our mind and our actions are influenced by our attitude. If we can realign the state of our mind we can get onto the neutral path of not 100% then somewhere close to it.

So true. We have to look at ourselves before judging anyone else. If we take a few minutes to consider our own faults and mistakes we won’t be so quick to judge others. Great post.

Absolutely, self reflection is the best tool for self growth and when everyone does that they will have equal respect for others also.
