Underground fungus, most often tuber-shaped, spherical or ovoid, with small indentations, furrows, bulges. It can reach 5-6 cm in diameter. The surface is somewhat reminiscent of potato tubers, chestnut. The color ranges from red-brown to purple-brown. The fungus has numerous channels and compartments, the cross section resembles cerebral ganglia, sometimes marble.
Occurrence: A species of fungus quite popular in Poland, it occurs mainly in deciduous forests, under hornbeam or oak beech trees. It appears in early spring in May and grows until October.
Value: Edible mushroom with medium taste values, slightly spicy flavor.
