Shipwreck Bay, or as some say, Shipwreck Beach, is undoubtedly one of the most popular attractions of the island of Zakynthos, also called by the locals Zante, and at the same time one of the most photographed place in Greece. The most famous Greek shipwreck is located on a beautiful beach, among huge cliffs.

The location of the beach is so special that it can only be reached by sea. The island does not offer many historical attractions and monuments apart from a few churches and monasteries, but its natural beauty is simply stunning. It is full of wonderful landscapes, amazing beaches, charming coves, olive groves and very nice inhabitants of the island.

Where did this shipwreck come from?

The history of the ship dates back to 1937. It was founded in the Scottish shipyard in Bowling and was then called MV Saint Bedan. The ship was 158 feet long, 26 feet wide, and the tonnage was 452. It changed hands many times.

Italian Mafia Ship?

In 1975 the ship changed hands and changed its name to Panagiotis. Local stories about the history of the ship are different and contradictory. One of the legends says that the ship was used by the Italian mafia to smuggle cigarettes and one day it was tracked by the Greek Navy and, during the chase, ran aground and thrown ashore. The smugglers abandoned the ship and cargo and escaped.

Another legend says that the ship is a mere marketing trick designed to chase tourists on a depopulating island. The truth, however, is quite different. In fact, the ship was carrying legal cargo from Kefalonia to Albania, but during a storm, the ship was thrown ashore and the crew had to abandon it, leaving all the contents behind. Soon after this event, the ship was looted and looted.

The bay makes an amazing impression from every vantage point, but there is one unique place. To the north of the bay, on a high cliff, there is an observation deck from which you can see the shipwreck.

There are, of course, other viewpoints, but with very difficult access and no security whatsoever. There have been a few fatal accidents there and therefore they have been excluded from tourist traffic.

But the shipwreck beach is not all the attractions of the island of Zakynthos. By boat from Aigos Nikolaos (around 15 euros), you can stop at the Blue Cave and swim in the crystal blue water. Caves of various shapes were created in white, limestone cliffs. They are in the form of windows, arches forming bridges, and are full of stalactites.

Coral reef, is it worth it?

It may not be one of the most beautiful in the world, but the light that operates in the water and the extraordinary views that make underwater traveling into a theater spectacle are noteworthy.
