Cross Culture question : 🌎What is something people from other places might find strange about your country or culture?🌎

Our friends from the @abundance.tibe had another excellent question this week. One that makes you think about you own country and culture and how you and other people look at it. Sometimes it is even hard to realize that others look at this differently, because when you don't know stuff is done different...how would you know that it might be weird?

So...I am from Holland. What is weird for other and normal for us?

Biking in the rain

Biking through the rain. Although I really hate doing it, this is something that we all grew up with. You just put on some rain clothing, take your bike and go to school. Did I mention that biking 2 x 10 kilometers to get to school by yourself is actually very normal?

What I learned in the Caribbean is that the general idea from transportation through the rain in general is very different. As in...when it rains..You stay inside. And with valid reason due to flooding and road conditions. But in Holland there are a ton of bicycle paths and actually they are almost always in very good condition. No need not to bike.

And what I have hears from expat moms over here is that they found it torture to send their kid through the rain to school, as if the kid would melt. The Dutch mentality: 'this will shape you and your willpower'.

Biking in the rain, I still hate it and try to do it as least as possible.

Speaking our mind...always

The majority of people find this a good habit on Dutch people. That they are honest and dont respect hierarchy that much. This means you will have confrontation every now and then, but mostly you have peopel who want what is best for the company and are not afraid to say it.

I do find that there is a downside to this. We are always taught that if you say something in the 'What I find...' form, means that you can almost say anything. Not becuse you are telling a truth, but you are speaking your mind and you are always entiteld to do that.

If you ask me, sometimes it wouldn't be such a bad idea to sometimes just zip it a little. Because you think something and even if most likely you are right about it, doesn't mean that you have to spread the message.

Licorice is awesome!

Now licorice is something that I usually will not buy because I will eat it all at once, leaving a tummy ache and high bloodpressure behind as evidence. Especially salty ones are my favorite. But this is surely not for everyone.

I have always taken licorice with me around the world, and I remember my colleagues swearing at me with the question I was trying to poison them, that is how much they hated it. I guess you needed to have grown up with this to appreciate it.

So! That was me, what about you? Do you wan't to join in the contest as well? Check out the #crossculture tribe and go for it. What do you have to loose? It is just a cool topic to write about actually, learning more about ourselves and others.
