The meaning of the proverb "Buy a house, buy a neighbour" is to emphasize the importance of good neighbours. When the neighbours in the immediate vicinity of the purchased house consist of good people, the pleasure of life in the house increases, and when they are bad, they somehow have a negative effect on your life in the house. Neighbours are also very important in our culture and belief.
The Prophet's saying "It is not one of us who is full while his neighbour is hungry" also emphasises the importance of neighbourhood. However, if you compromise as much as you want, try to get along as much as you want, you have no chance to meet at a common point when there is someone who lacks understanding and whose empathy ability has never developed.
For years, I have been washing my private car in front of my house with a hose assembly installed in my garden and my car washing apparatus. Until 1 year ago, I was subjected to the unsympathetic approach of the people who bought my building across the street and became my neighbours.
The 2 vehicles they keep parked almost 24/7 are constantly blocking half of the road. The fact that they are directly opposite my house and entrance door prevents me from parking my own vehicle in front of my house, even for a few minutes. I cannot wash my car where I have washed my car for years, I cannot unload and load the goods I have to carry in front of my house.
I use the automatic car washes at petrol stations to wash my car. I didn't have much of a problem with this, until I saw that the price at the automatic washes had suddenly increased by 300%. With a 2 Turkish Lira token, I used to wash my car first with foam and then with pressurised water for a total of 4 Turkish Lira. Now a single token costs 6 Lira and since 2 tokens are required, the total is 12 Lira.
In the dry season of summer, I have to wash the vehicle frequently due to the extra dust. The cost, which seems simple and cheap in appearance, increases considerably on a monthly/yearly basis when the total cost is considered. The country that seems expensive to us is quite cheap to foreigners due to the rise in exchange rates. Even pre-pandemic records are broken in the tourism sector.
Due to the situation caused by a bad and unsympathetic neighbour, I am faced with an additional budget such as my monthly car wash costs. Which is quite funny!
