The Hungarian puszta - my days on the countryside #1

in blurtlife •  3 years ago  (edited)

I'm in Hungary for a couple of weeks, staying at my parents house where I grew up in a small town on the Great Plain.

There's no hills around, the nearest mountains are in Romania, 3 hours drive away (although on clear days you can see them from outside of our town), and the Hungarian hills/mountains are about 4 hours drive away.

Many people say, that this land is boring, there's nothing to see here, but I still think sunsets are the prettiest from the 'puszta' = prairie, and I love it that I can see so far through the horizon.

Most of the areas around here is is agricultural land (look at the golden barely!), growing mostly corn, sunflower, wheat and rapeseed. The Körös Maros National Park is nearby, where you can find different protected grasses, plants, birds and insects. During our last cycling trip, I saw 2 types of birds and a few types of insects I never saw in my life before.

A typical animal you would have seen in the 'puszta' many years ago all around the country is the Hungarian Grey Steppe, they are renowned of their long lyre-shaped horns and a pale grey coat. These ones usually graze around the national park.

I love cycling around the fields and stay out late until the sunset, there's a type of stillness and calmness around here which I really needed after the busy London life.

Who else is also from a 'flat-land'?

I think prairies offer the third-best view of the sky, out of any terrain type. The best for seeing the sky (and horizon) would be up a mountaintop, and the second best would be the ocean. Huge skies of 180 degrees! Or more, if you have elevation.
Myself, I live in a fairly bumpy place... British Columbia, Canada. We have to go East to Alberta if we want truly flat prairies :P
