Washing away the dreams and Hopes : Flood Situation in Bangladesh

Intro

Floods are one of the major and normal disasters in Bangladesh. I say normal because the people of Bangladesh have to face this flood every year. One of the main reasons for this is the geographical location of Bangladesh. In South Asian countries, the type of topography is high in the northern part and low in the southern part. Bangladesh is located in the southern part and there are Himalayan mountains in the north so the topography is high to low i.e. from north to south. Every year during the monsoon season, water flows from the northern region, i.e. the surrounding northern countries and the hilly areas towards the Bay of Bengal (which is south to Bangladesh). Due to this, during the monsoon season, different areas of Bangladesh, especially about 20 out of 64 districts have to face floods every year. But this year the flood situation was a little higher and it has had a very serious impact on many districts.

Flood Situation

Now is the last time of monsoon season in Bangladesh. Even 20/25 days ago, most of the people of our country went through severe floods. Houses, roads, various establishments, schools and colleges have been submerged in the flood waters. Such people live in different districts every year and there is a huge loss of property and goods. On the one hand, the country and the people of the country are living a very difficult life through the Corona situation, on the other hand, the situation has become more acute due to the flood situation. People have no jobs, no business, on the other hand, the floodwaters have washed away homes and wasted resources, leaving people in a very difficult time.

This flood situation has affected many parts of the country as well as my district i.e. Comilla where floods do not usually occur. This time the situation was much worse. Many roads in rural areas have been submerged, causing severe damage to human movement and the movement of cattle and other animals. In many other districts the situation was even worse.

As you can see in the picture, we are walking on a bridge made of bamboo in the flood but it is also submerged in the flood water. As a result of flooding in different areas, bamboo bridges have been constructed so that people can easily cross at least on foot. It is not possible to move cars, rickshaws, autorickshaws or other vehicles but the bamboo bridge built for human movement has also been submerged. Usually these bamboo bridges are constructed a little higher than the water level but the flood waters have surpassed them. The situation was actually very bad which created a hugely difficult situation just before Eid. The incessant rains were making the situation more fragile and vulnerable.

Fish Farmers are in Trouble

Floods are another major problem for fish farmers because as the flood waters rise, there is a tendency for ponds or different projects of fish to overflow, and the cost of preventing these fish increases as well. Many times, the water level rises so much that it is no longer possible to keep the fish trapped. This time I have blocked the net made fence with my elder brother many times because my elder brother farms fish.

Some causes

Many blame India and northern countries for Bangladesh being the victims of such floods. This is because in many cases it is seen that they block the water in summer by blocking it and then release the water due to heavy rains in winter season. As a result, the southern countries, which are in the lowlands, are severely affected. Geographical location is one of the main reasons for floods in Bangladesh every year, as well as the behavior of neighboring countries. Although there are international policies in case of obstructing water, many countries around the world, as we see, have an impact by violating international law, often ignoring these policies. The consequences are to be borne by low-income or small countries.

Hope

The amount of flood damage in Bangladesh is huge. This loss is a blow to our GDP and economic prosperity every year. I hope that in the future the government will pay more attention to this issue and play a leading role in rescuing the people from the flood situation. In this way our country and our people will forget the flood situation and will be able to live a good, beautiful and prosperous life. With this hope, I am saying goodbye here like today. Thanks for stopping by my post.
