Why cats like bleach?

in blurtlife •  3 years ago

I have found out that my cat is attracted to bleach. How do I know this? Well a few days ago my father was trying to save one of my shirts from disaster by using bleach. After he had finished and washed his hands my cat, Latte, came up to him and started licking his hand. This is really weird because my cat doesn't usually go anywhere near my father, well unless he's hungry. Back to the story, my cat started frantically licking my dad's hand and this got him curious. He smelt his hand and there was a bleach scent on it. This brings me to the question, why do cat like bleach?

According to persiancatcorner.com we still don't know why cats like bleach but what we do know is that the chlorine in the bleach has the same reaction on cats as catnip. The two substances act as a pheromone and makes the cats a bit loopy. Of course please don't give your cat bleach because this can cause vomiting, stomach pains, skin irritation and excessive drooling for your furry feline friend. None of this happened to my cat, but Latte did have a little blood in his poo. Is there a possible connection?

Yep, every site says the same thing - without proof - shared ignorance.
I shall search again, coz bleach isn't chlorine, but hypochlorite - similar but different.
Indeed, your cat was happy enough swimming in our pool - which uses salt - without going insane ;-) that's a clue.
More detective work needed.

Maybe the #blurtimals tag would be good here.
Not sure if it is still active - would need to ask @angelica7 ;-)
