When it Rains, it Pours: Computer Problems!

It certainly does feel like 2020 has been a year with plenty of downsides!

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that my main desktop computer that I use for work started "behaving badly" a few weeks ago.

Which also explains why no posts here for a while...

But anyway, I finally had no choice but to haul it into our local tech "fix-it" shop at the end of last month, before things got worse.

Granted, it's getting to be an older machine, but I had still hoped to get a few more years out of it.

In the meantime, I have been trying to do my work from my laptop, but it is really not designed for "work;" having ultimately just been purchased as a travel computer to write emails, check web sites and onload holiday pictures onto. And write a little, because I enjoy writing when I am away.

So yesterday the "diagnosis" finally came back: The core CPU was overheating because the thermal paste had mostly evaporated, and one of my main hard drives — the ne with the Windows install — was failing.

Which basically leaves me with two options: Have them install a new solid-state hard drive and reinstall Windows for $340.00 (which I can't afford) or I go out and buy a completely new system for about $900.00 which I really can't afford.

Bottom line, life is expensive!

Of course, this is all set against a backdrop of our online businesses having their worst holiday season sales since 2008! Actually, worse than 2008.

And so, the title of this post is "When it rains, it pours!"

You can try to cool the CPU with an extra fan. And I guess the fix it guy has already applied the thermal compound.

You can try to see what kind of background applications are running and try to uninstall them.

Now there's a name I know.

I experienced an instantaneous computer crash a couple of months ago. Time to buy a new computer. With Covid-19, the supply chains were crippled AND all the school districts were buying en masse. Most stores didn't have any laptops at all and waiting lists were measured in months.

Panic.

I finally (accidently) stumbled upon a Staples with a HP Pavillion. I bought in a heartbeat.

Crazy year, 2020. :-)
