November 15th, 2020: Just Some Random Thoughts — Ulog No. 15

Greetings all!

Hard to believe it's already mid-November. Even though 2020 basically feels like it has been the $h1tshow from Hell, the year seems to have moved along pretty quickly.

Of course, that could be simply on account of the fact that I am getting older... and it seems like time is moving faster.

Election Mumblings, Redux...

I have pretty much turned my back on the circus show that is the US Presidential election. The latest news I am peripherally aware of is that Trump actually used the words "Biden won" for the first time, even though those words were surrounded by ongoing claims of fraud.

I don't really care a great deal, one way or the other, what I care about is how this rather surreal stalemate is/may be interfering with the running of a country that is in the middle of both an economic and healthcare crisis.

If I have to make any sort of editorial comment on it all, it would be that it feels like politicians — who are allegedly in PUBLIC service — seem increasingly concerned more about themselves than about the public as time goes by.

Coronavirus Worries...

I have had much gratitude for the fact that we live in a somewhat sparsely populated county in the state of Washington, and so far it has been a Low Risk area.

As of early last week, we'd only had 92 confirmed cases (7 of which were "active") and no deaths in our county. Most people here are more or less "hermits" to begin with, so being told to stay at home is not that much of a big deal.

I fear that's going to change soon, however... as Thanksgiving approaches, and there inevitably will be many families who will go forward with their Thanksgiving celebrations, including visits by family members who live in "high risk" areas.

I expect we'll see a spike in confirmed cased, come mid-December.

Making a Living, When Everyone's Worried...

On one hand, being self-employed is a pretty good thing when you have a situation like this: Neither I nor Mrs. Denmarkguy have to leave the house to go TO a job... so that makes us feel relatively safe.

On the other hand, we're struggling because we have customers and clients and they are all feeling the economic squeeze and the uncertainty over the future of their jobs.

That gets "passed along" in the form of lower sales than we are used to... and so, the cycle of decline continues. Makes me wonder how many times this is repeating itself, across the world?

And also... how long can this go on? We're all gradually going to run out of resources to keep going... and then what? An enormous homeless population by the end of March?

I sometimes wonder if this will be the "trigger" that results in Universal Basic Income becoming a serious possibility... people can't live on thin air.

Blurt, and the Future?

I read an article on a non-crypto blog not so long ago about our possible future in which "work" is completely redefined from being going somewhere to do a job you get paid for by a company, to being nothing but a series of small autonomous "gigs" we are part of, which — when all added together — end up affording people "a living."

It made me think of crypto blogging platforms like Blurt, which may not be able to outright support people, but as one-of-many things we do present part of the key to our futures.

Blurt might not be my work, but (let's say) $50 a month helps towards the picture. And, of course, there are parts of the world — Venezuela comes to mind — in which $50 a month would be a really big deal.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you've had a good weekend!
