Hoy les quiero traer una reseña de un autor que descubrí hace no mucho tiempo: Erik Valeur, periodista y escritor.
Es uno de esos autores escandinavos que no escribe demasiado (y al decir esto quiero decir que no saca un libro detrás de otro) sino que como otros colegas de características similares como Peter Hoeg, prefiere tomarse un tiempo antes de publicarlo.
El resultado normalmente es un libro bastante voluminoso, ideal parea compartir en estos tiempos de pandemia, en los que -al estar canceladas muchas actividades sociales- la lectura pasa a ser una actividad sumamente importante.
De este autor les quiero traer la reseña de El Séptimo Niño una novela que es en cierto modo autobiográfica.

Today I want to bring you a review of an author I discovered not long ago: Erik Valeur, journalist and writer.
He is one of those Scandinavian authors who doesn't write too much (and by saying this I mean he doesn't put out one book after another) but like other colleagues with similar characteristics such as Peter Hoeg, he prefers to take his time before publishing.
The result is usually a rather voluminous book, ideal for sharing in these times of pandemic, in which -as many social activities are cancelled- reading becomes an extremely important activity.
From this author I would like to bring you the review of El Séptimo Niño a novel that is in a way autobiographical.
Estamos en presencia de una de esas novelas a las que hay que dedicarle su tiempo. Hay que leerla despacio, sin prisa, releyendo algunos conceptos, sin apuro por llegar al final.
Son algo más de 700 páginas en las cuáles Valeur logra tejer una trama muy bien urdida mezclando la política danesa con una profunda psicología que emana de un orfanatrofio (el autor mismo proviene de uno de estos institutos) hasta enraizarse en las más altas cargas del estado, con una dosis de intriga, poder, corrupción y hasta asesinatos muy bien dosificada.
En líneas generales podríamos definir la trama como la historia de 7 huérfanos que con el pasar de los años se transforman en figuras relevantes de la sociedad de Dinamarca. En la política, en el periodismo y en las ciencias.
Y de 7 cartas que son despachadas (luego de transcurrido varios años) a cada uno de ellos haciendo expresa referencia a una desaparición. Y a una muerte misteriosa en las playas de Kongslund, una localidad situada al norte de Copenhaguen, a la cual la policía no presta demasiada atención porque ocurre el dia 10 de setiembre. Un dìa antes del trágico atentado a las Torres Gemelas de los EE.UU.
La noticia pasa absolutamente inadvertida, no obstante la importancia que tiene.
Todos han ignorado o no han investigado las causas de la muerte vde la persona que no ha sido n i siquiera identificada.
Todos salvo un tenaz periodista que trata de cerrar su carrera con el scoop de su vida. Y con ello de lograr mantener a flote el diario para el que trabaja.
Los huérfanos han sido adoptados. Algunos lo sabían de antemano. Otros no. Y para ellos es un verdadero shock.
Lo notable de la novela es que no vacila en meter al primer ministro de la nación como protagonista central de la conjura. Haciendole cumplir un papel no demasiado simpático.
Y la historia se entrelza con los niños refugiados y como son usados por el gobierno para su política interna. Demostrando que el país escandinavo no es ni por asomo el paraíso que durante años se ha tratado de hacer creer internacionalmente.
Incluso la denuncia (en este caso real) llega al punto de poner a la luz el experimento (con escasísima difusión en los medios de comunicación daneses e internacionales) llevado a cabo en 1950 cuando para estudiar su comportamiento fueron alejados de su ambiente natural un grupo de niños inuites y separados de sus familias en Groenlandia para ser llevados a Dinamarca. Usados como elementos de laboratorio.
Experimentos con niños, hijos ilegítimos en las altas eferas de gobierno y presunto tráfico de órganos completan la trama de este libro excelente.
Y un final difícilmente prevedible.
In general terms, we could define the plot as the story of seven orphans who over the years become important figures in Danish society. In politics, journalism and science.
And of 7 letters that are sent (after several years) to each of them expressly referring to a disappearance. And to a mysterious death on the beaches of Kongslund, a town north of Copenhagen, to which the police do not pay much attention because it occurs on September 10th. The news goes completely unnoticed, despite its importance.
All have ignored or have not investigated the causes of the death of the person who has not even been identified.
All except a tenacious journalist who is trying to close his career with the scoop of his life. And with it to keep the newspaper he works for afloat.
The orphans have been adopted. Some knew beforehand. Others did not. And for them it is a real shock.
What is remarkable about the novel is that it does not hesitate to cast the nation's prime minister as the central protagonist of the plot. Making him play a not too sympathetic role.
And the story is intertwined with the refugee children and how they are used by the government for its internal politics. Demonstrating that the Scandinavian country is not nearly the paradise that for years they have been trying to make believe internationally.
Even the denunciation (in this real case) reaches the point of bringing to light the experiment (with very little diffusion in the Danish and international media) carried out in 1950 when, in order to study their behavior, a group of Inuit children were taken away from their natural environment and separated from their families in Greenland to be taken to Denmark. Used as laboratory elements.
Experiments with children, illegitimate children in the high spheres of government and alleged organ trafficking complete the plot of this excellent book.
And an ending that is hardly foreseeable.
Habituados a una lectura costumbrista y facilista es difícil elaborar un juicio sobre este libro. Personalmente me gustó mucho aunque tardé dos o tres veces más que leer un libro normal. Y no solo por la cantidad de páginas. Sino también por todo el entramado.
El libro va siendo relatado en primera persona por una niña, una de las huérfanas. Y por otro lado el autor desarrolla el argumento con el resto de los personajes en la clásica tercera persona.
Tal vez lo que cause un poco de fastidio es el exceso de palabras para expresar una situación. Tal vez sea una condición natural del autor. Un verdadero apasionado de la gramática.
Totalmente opuesto al estilo de muchos escritores estadounidenses que hacen de la síntesis su principal virtud. En ciertos capítulos me hizo acordar al estilo de Umberto Eco en El Péndulo de Foucault del cuál les hablé en otra reseña.]
Si tienen la oportunidad de leerlo seguramente habrá algunos a los que les guste y a otros no.
En mi modesta opinión, y a pesar de la paciencia que hay que tener en leerlo, conserva intacta la calidad literaria de las grandes novelas.
Accustomed to an easy, genre reading, it is difficult to make a judgment about this book. Personally I liked it a lot even though it took me two or three times longer than reading a normal book. And not only because of the number of pages. But also because of the whole plot.
The book is narrated in first person by a girl, one of the orphans. On the other hand, the author develops the plot with the rest of the characters in the classic third person.
Perhaps what causes a bit of annoyance is the excess of words to express a situation. Perhaps it is a natural condition of the author. A true lover of grammar.
Totally opposed to the style of many American writers who make synthesis their main virtue. In certain chapters it reminded me of Umberto Eco's style in Foucault's Pendulum which I told you about [in other review.
If you have the opportunity to read it, there will surely be some who like it and some who do not.
In my modest opinion, and in spite of the patience it takes to read it, it preserves intact the literary quality of the great novels.
