On Ash Wednesday, 17 February, 1600, Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake for numerous heresies against Catholic Church doctrines.
400 years later, the forces of obedience and control are manifestly back with a vengeance. We may no longer roast people in public, but freedom of thought is now a dead ancestor. Thoughts are being eradicated in modern ways, the burning of books being replaced by the take-down of websites. Those who refuse to be gagged are suicided in silence.
In 1889, a statue of Giordano Bruno was erected on the same spot in the Campo de' Fiori in Rome; a symbol to freedom of thought.
This was Bruno's response to being sentenced to death:
Perhaps we can shorten it to: You sentence me with more fear than I!
You condemn me with more fear than I!
A motto for our age?
Be prepared, for we too shall burn under the modern inquisition.

Because I no longer remain ignorant, I know that you are now in fear.
Condemned are those who do not consent?
Like Galileo, Bruno made the mistake of remaining within a jurisdiction that hated him. Actually, he was tossed over by the Venetians coz they didn't like him either! He should have stayed up in the Reformation countries.
The point is not whether he was right or wrong - tho it helps to be right - but that the ideas were not up for debate. mmm... we are no further along.
