Turkey is a country located on the boundary between the Eurasian and African plates known as the North Anatolian Fault Zone. This fault zone is one of the most active seismic regions in the world, causing a significant number of earthquakes in Turkey.
The North Anatolian Fault Zone is a transformation fault, meaning that two tectonic plates move horizontally to each other. As the plates move, stress builds up along fault zones and is eventually released in the form of earthquakes.
In addition to the North Anatolian Fault Zone, Turkey also has several active fault zones that contribute to the country's seismic activity, such as the East Anatolian Fault, the Aegean Fault and the Bitlis-Zagros Fault.
Turkey's quake ranges in magnitude from small tremors to large destructive events.
