Dear friends,
I wish you all happy 'Makar Sankranti.' In West Bengal, we celebrate this festival as a 'Poush Sankranti.' This festival is actually known in a different name in the different states of India. In north India, this festival is known as 'Makar Sankranti'; Assam this festive is known as 'Bihu'; South India this festive known as 'Pongal'; in WestBengal, this festival is known as 'Poush parbon or Poush Sankranti.' We Bengalis celebrate this festival according to the Bengali calendar, the last day of 'poush' month. Today is the same day, and this particular day we celebrate by cooking special sweet dishes made with rice flour and palm jaggery. On this day, farmers harvest their crops.
Today My sister-in-law made some delicious 'Pithe' for this festive day.
I already shared the puli pithe recipe, and the remaining recipe will share later. Today I am here to discuss the festival only.
In my childhood, I saw my mother clean up the house one day before the festival. On the same day, she woke up early at 4 am. Then she took a bath first and then she made alpona with rice batter on every doorstep. In the evening, we celebrate as a feast by having different 'Pitha' and 'patishapta.'
Many people go for a holy bath in the river Ganga, Yamuna, Krishna. Many children fly kites and tear the strings. It's believed that this would fly away with bad luck. Many worshiped Sun God, and many worshipped Goddess Laxmi.
As per Hindu Mythology, it's believed that on this same day, God Sun visit his Son God 'Sani dev'(ruling God of Capricorn), there is a story (will share later)behind it that shani dev and God Sun's relationship was not good. On this day, father and son forgot their past bitter relationship, and their conflicts change into happiness.
In Mahabharata 'Bhishma Pitama was injured during the Kurukshetra war. But, he was blessed by immortality. On this particular day, Bhishma Pitama left his mortal body. So, it is believed that if anyone who dies this day will attain moksha.
That's all for today. I hope you like the information and the food I shared. Again wish you all a happy Poush Sankranti. Eat and enjoy. Stay blessed.
