Eight-spotted crab spider (lat. Platythomisus octomaculatus) is a real beauty! It seems as if it was specially painted with a thin brush. At the same time, the first segments of the legs, the cephalothorax and chelicerae were made bright orange, the tips of the legs and their last segments were painted with coal-black paint, and the abdomen was highlighted in bright yellow, decorating it with black dots.
However, all this beauty serves for one single purpose - disguise. Eight-spotted crab spiders spend most of their time on flowers, waiting for suitable prey. This is where they need such a pretty color: the bees, flying up to the flower, do not see the danger and fall directly into the paws of a contented predator.
All representatives of the crab spider family do not want to weave a web. The weapons for them are modified front legs, which are noticeably larger and more massive than the rest of the limbs. It is with the help of such strong and dexterous legs that they catch their victims. The body of the spiders is smooth and flattened, which helps them hide better among the flowers.
