A crocodile cub was caught in the net of fishermen of Sahpara village in Pangsha upazila of Rajbari last Tuesday. Hearing that the fishermen were trying to sell the baby crocodile, local schoolteacher Moslem Uddin took a picture of the crocodile on his mobile phone and posted it on Facebook asking for help to rescue it. Many people commented on the post. The post also came to the notice of Arafatur Rahman, president of Tir (Team for Energy and Environmental Research), an environmental organization at Azizul Haq College in Bogra. He immediately contacted the school teacher and other people in the area and several officials of the forest department. In the end, Mollah Rezaul Karim, Forest Conservator of Social Forest Department, Jessore came forward. Faridpur Social Forest Department personnel rescued the baby crocodile and sent it to the Wildlife Crime Suppression Unit in Dhaka on Wednesday. In the afternoon, while talking to the director of this unit, Zaheer Akon, I came to know that the baby had reached them a while ago. After weighing and testing the puppy, it will be kept with another crocodile at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur. In this way, due to the initiative of the local people and the activities of the wildlife lovers, the endangered reptile cub survived.

In Bangladesh, the habitat of the crocodile is mainly from Fulchhari Ghat on the Jamuna River to Nagarbari Ghat and from Charghat on the Padma River to Godagari. There are only about 200 wild crocodiles in the world in the natural environment.
The crocodile is different from other crocodiles for its extremely long jaws. In the upper jaw of the male, just above the nose there is a lump or pitcher shaped lump. And that's probably why it's called a crocodile. With the exception of the long jaw, they look like other crocodiles. The back and tail are wrapped in thorny hard scales. It is 4.5 to 9 meters in length.
Fish is their main food. Fishless fish, especially boal, ayr, guji, pangas preferred. The long jaw is especially suitable for fishing. They are known as fish crocodiles as fish is the main food. They like to sunbathe on the shelf. There is usually a huge yawn during sunbathing. Although it does no harm to people, people do not leave them to harm at all.
Chaitra is their breeding season. At this time the female crocodile lays 40-50 eggs by digging a hole in the sand. Each capsule-shaped white egg weighs two and a half hundred grams. The eggs hatch in 60-65 days. The main enemies of the chicks are big crocodiles, crocodiles, birds of prey, boiled giant fish etc. Puppies are fertile at the age of four to five years. Their lifespan is 50-60 years.
