This the beautiful bird. The best strategy for peacocks — and for other animals when they communicate, from gazelles advertising their agility in front of lions to baby birds begging for worms —can be identified using game theory, the mathematical study of how different decisions affect the outcome of a game. In the evolutionary game, where the goal is producing offspring, rampant dishonesty is not an optimal strategy: If peacock tails are never honest, peahens will simply ignore that feature altogether. But perfect honesty, which was long thought to be the evolutionary strategy of choice, may not be ideal either, as some evidence now indicated.
Peacocks seem to pop up all over parks and zoos, so they might not seem endangered, but there are certain subspecies of this bird that are in danger of going extinct. This includes the Bornean Peacock Pheasant and the Hainan Peacock Pheasant.
Bornean Peacocks are found in Indonesia, and though it's hard to calculate exactly, there are only about 600–1,700 left. The Hainan Peacock, found in the Chinese province, is doing even worse, with about 250–999 left in existence.
