Sossusvlei Facts:
- The name "Sossusvlei" roughly means "dead-end marsh". "Sossus" is Nama for "no return" or "dead end" and "vlei" is the Afrikaans word for "marsh".
- It is believed that the Tsauchab river once flowed from the Naukluft mountains to around 50km off the Atlantic Ocean.
- The sand of Sossusvlei is approximately five million years old.
- Sossusvlei is situated in the largest conservation area in Africa, the Namib-Naukluft National Park.
- The dunes of the Namib (some of the highest in the world) were created over millions of years, by sand being carried on strong winds from the coast.
- The Namib Desert is one of only two coastal deserts in the world.
