José Gregorio Hernández, mejor conocido como el “Venerable” y/o “Medico de los Pobres”, nacido el 26 de Octubre de 1864 en Isnotú, un pueblo humilde ubicado en el Estado Trujillo, Venezuela, según los Historiadores, sus estudios de primaria los realizo en la Ciudad de Trujillo, hasta la edad de los 13 años, hasta que se mudó a Caracas con sus padres. Fue un estudiante responsable, y sobresaliente, se dedicaba a estudiar, y aprender lo más necesario posible, en 1884 se graduó como Bachiller en Filosofía. Sus deseos eran estudiar Derecho, sin embargo su padre lo convención de estudiar Medicina, el para no decepcionarlo, comenzó a estudiar dicha carrera, en la única Universidad que había en el país, la UCV (Universidad Central de Venezuela). Cuatro años más tarde, se graduó como Medico, con las mejores notas.
Al completar sus estudios, decidió regresar a su pueblo natal, Isnotú, donde se dedicó atender a los más necesitados, en aquel entonces, en las poblaciones rurales de Venezuela, existían muchas enfermedades, que sin duda anualmente acababan con miles de personas, entre ellas la Tuberculosis, o el Paludismo, sin embargo José Gregorio Hernández, entendía la importancia que tenía ayudar a estas personas, que no disfrutaban de una atención sanitaria de calidad, esto hizo que se ganara el respeto y admiración de sus pacientes y habitantes del pueblo.
Pero sin pensarlo, unos meses después, su gran desempeño académico, su esfuerzo y dedicación, lo llevaron a obtener una beca en el Continente Europeo, exactamente en Francia, para cursar materias que no se veían en el país para ese entonces. Así que decide tomar esta oportunidad, e irse al viejo continente. Gracias a esta oportunidad El Dr. Hernández, amplio sus conocimientos y tuvo una mejor preparación en las siguientes áreas: “Microbiología, Histología Normal, Patología, Bacteriología y Fisiología Experimental”.
Cuando culmino sus estudios en Paris, regresa a Venezuela, y esto lo llevo a ser nombrado, Cátedra de Bacteriología en América del Sur. El Dr. José Gregorio, aparte de atender pacientes, curar enfermos, se convirtió en un Científico, que con sus estudios, logro hacer grandes aportes a la medicina moderna en Venezuela, y aparte de todo lo mencionado, fue Profesor en la UCV (Universidad Central de Venezuela), desde 1891 hasta 1916, sin embargo su más grande resto estaba por venir, reto que hizo que su vida, su historia y legado quedaran inmortalizado en el tiempo, en 1918 llega al país, un virus convertido en pandemia, que azota a la mayoría de los países del mundo, conocido como Gripe Española, el Doctor José Gregorio Hernández, llevo su fe a otro nivel, sus creencias religiosas fueron sus fieles compañeras, para combatir este virus, comentan los Cronitas, que recorría toda caracas, buscando infectados, tratando de salvarlos, algunos dicen que en las calles las personas que tenían esta enfermedad caían desmayada, y si él estaba cerca iba de inmediato atenderles, a tratar de salvarles.
Su gran labor como médico, ayudo a muchas personas, porque a él no le importaba tu condición social, tu condición económica, te atendía igual, te ayudaba, te orientaba, su forma de ser tan calmada, su humildad, lo convirtieron en una gran persona, un gran médico, que tenía muy clara su vocación y convicción, pero lastimosamente no todo es para siempre, en 1919, falleció mientras socorría según a un paciente, un auto lo atropello y se dio a la fuga. Hablar de este gran Medico Venezolano, es llenarse de sentimiento, escribir sobre sus logros, su dedicación, y su labor, es algo admirable, y dice mucho de lo que fue José Gregorio Hernández, un hombre culto, sabio, visionario, que pensaba en las personas, en los más necesitados, en su país, que buscaba la manera de que la medicina avanzara, que la medicina evolucionara, a pesar de que mientras el ejercía su profesión, estaba bajo un gobierno Dictatorial, que limitaba mucho el conocimiento, y no trataba de mejorar el sistema sanitario de esa Venezuela, lo increíble de este gran hombre es que hablaba más de 2 idiomas: “Inglés, Francés, Italiano, Alemán, Portugués, Español”. Fue músico y un gran filósofo.
En la Actualidad José Gregorio Hernández, es más que el Medico de los Pobres, desde los años 50 comenzaron a verlo como un Santo, porque muchos alegaban que acudieron a él cuándo presentaban un problema de salud, y gracias al Dr. Hernández, ocurría el milagro de solucionar esa problemática que presentaban, y tanto es así, que en Junio del 2020, el Papa Francisco, decreto su beatificación, gracias al milagro de una niña que en el 2017 estuvo al borde de la muerte, por un disparo en la cabeza, dicho milagro fue aprobado y reconocido por todos los cardenales, muchos países Latinoamericanos incluyendo a Venezuela, celebraron esta noticia, y hoy le piden con mucha fuerza, que los ayude a superar esta pandemia.

José Gregorio Hernández, better known as the "Venerable" and/or "Doctor of the Poor", was born on October 26, 1864 in Isnotú, a humble town located in the State of Trujillo, Venezuela. Thanks to this opportunity, Dr. Hernandez expanded his knowledge and had a better preparation in the following areas: "Microbiology, Normal Histology, Pathology, Bacteriology and Experimental Physiology".
When he finished his studies in Paris, he returned to Venezuela, and this led him to be named, Professor of Bacteriology in South America. Dr. Jose Gregorio, besides attending patients, curing the sick, became a scientist, who with his studies, managed to make great contributions to modern medicine in Venezuela, and apart from all that was mentioned, he was a Professor at the UCV (Central University of Venezuela), from 1891 to 1916, however his biggest challenge was still to come, a challenge that made his life, his history and legacy immortalized in time, in 1918 a virus turned into a pandemic arrives in the country, that plagues most countries in the world, known as the Spanish Flu, Dr. Jose Gregorio Hernandez, took his faith to another level, his religious beliefs were his faithful companions, to combat this virus, said the Cronitas, who traveled all caracas, looking for infected, trying to save them, some say that in the streets people who had this disease fell faint, and if he was close would immediately attend to them, to try to save them.

To talk about this great Venezuelan physician is to be filled with feeling, to write about his achievements, his dedication and his work is something admirable, and says much about what José Gregorio Hernández was, a learned, wise and visionary man, who thought about the people, the most needy, in his country, who was looking for a way for medicine to advance, for medicine to evolve, despite the fact that while he practiced his profession, he was under a Dictatorial government, which limited knowledge a lot, and did not try to improve the health system of that Venezuela, the incredible thing about this great man is that he spoke more than 2 languages: "English, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Spanish". He was a musician and a great philosopher.
In the present Jose Gregorio Hernandez, is more than the Doctor of the Poor, since the 50's they began to see him as a Saint, because many claimed that they went to him when they had a health problem, and thanks to Dr. Hernandez, the miracle occurred to solve that problem they presented, and so much so that in June 2020, Pope Francis, decreed his beatification, thanks to the miracle of a girl who in 2017 was on the verge of death, by a shot in the head, that miracle was approved and recognized by all the cardinals, many Latin American countries including Venezuela, celebrated this news, and today they ask him with great force, to help them overcome this pandemic.
