Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 35:12-17

The promised land is now promised again to Jacob in the conversation we started last week. Then God leaves, it says "and God went up from him", so they made a place to mark the location and made offerings to God there. Along with that, they also gave the place a name. Bethel in Hebrew is Beyt El which means House of God.

Changing to another point in time the story sees Rachel going into labor. This is a very hard labor and she is having a son.

We will continue next week with the birth and naming of Benjamin. Benjamin, incidentally, means Son of the Right Hand.

Today's reading

English

The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and I will give the land to your off- spring after you." Then God went up from him in the place where he had spoken with him. And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he had spoken with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink offering on it and poured oil on it. So Jacob called the name of the place where God had spoken with him Bethel.

Then they journeyed from Bethel. When they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor, and she had hard labor. And when her labor was at its hardest, the midwife said to her, "Do not fear, for you have another son."

Shabbat Shalom. 🇮🇱

Some beautiful music from the Mount of Olives …

And forever exalted, by the servants, his servants
Who proclaim with a voice, with a voice of praise
Now children sing, sing, sing to the King
