I love Half-Life and the innovations it brought to gaming. Portal made by a smaller team eclipse all that with a better story and more fun gameplay (if you are into puzzles). Last few hours of Portal 2 was exhilarating!
There are many fan theories and the writing and the lore of Portal franchise is some of the funniest content I have seen from a game. I don't think anyone should dedicate too much of their time to theories about some fictional content. Writers don't always overthink every aspect of the game.
There are reasons to say there should not be a Portal 3. The story was wrapped up in a good way at the end of Portal 2 and there isn't much that can be explored in a future game.
If you are fine with spoilers, I found a 2 hour 51 minute video that cover the lore. There are barely any cutscenes throughout the games and a large part of the lore is delivered via environmental storytelling.
I remember that part of Portal's lore was revealed in the comic of Rat-Man, one of the scientists who was in Portal's laboratory, and he suffered from schizophrenia, but he was more reasonable than his colleagues, and he told them that giving lethal weapons to a psychopathic AI was a very bad idea...
Anyway, his colleagues didn't listen to him and everything went to hell.
I have only seen few part of the comic. I first learned about the Rat-Man from this video:
You can read online it in https://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/
Or download in PDF, in http://media.steampowered.com/apps/portal2/comic/Portal2_Lab_Rat.pdf
Thank you!
I read it and it was amazing! Honestly I wish there were more content like it.
I think that the Valve company could very well give RatMan its own game within the 'Portal' universe
I would love to see a short but innovative game. The could even aim to make it a VR game.
