There are a variety of common game modes in the NFS Underground. The underground mode is the game's plot mode. Imagine that this is a way for you to relive your own version of the Quick and the Furious. I know you've probably seen this analogy about NFS Underground before, but it's true. Underground mode lets you play in over 100 different challenges/events to show yourself a worthy racer. You start with a small sum of money in the bank in Underground mode. Then you have to buy a car that you're going to drive with in the first part of the game. Both of the available cars are registered cars from automakers such as Ford, Dodge, Volkswagen, Mazda, and others.

Once you have picked a car, you will be entered into one of the races. There are some different types of events to run in: Circuit, Jog, Drag, Lap Knockout, and Drift. The Circuit Race is similar to a normal racetrack, except that the track is located within the area. During the run, you will have to contend against not just the other cars, but also oncoming traffic and city structures such as trees, guardrails, stop signs, etc. The Sprint race is where you have to get from Point A to Point B before you compete. The Drag Race (which is my favorite one) sees you racing against other drivers in a drag race on the city streets. The big difference between Sprint and Drag is that the drag race is completed right away. The Lap Knockout mode is a game where the driver who is in the last spot is knocked out of the race. This persists until there's just one driver remaining. The Drift Race is where you're doing power slides in your car. The whole point of a drift race is to surprise everyone with a slide.
Your vehicle is the real essence of the NFS Underground. Your car represents everything you represent. It's up to you to get the hottest, sickest, and most amazing car in the series. You will not be able to customize your car in an Underground mode right away, but you can make money and access customization features. There are some different customization options that can be added to your vehicle. There are various styles of hoods, bumpers, spoilers, rims, and other parts you can use to alter the appearance of your vehicle. You also improve your popularity in the game by adjusting the look of the vehicle. There's a credibility meter that shows you how high your level of reputation is in the game. The higher degree of credibility, the more points you can gain during the race. During each race, you receive style points that are used to unlock the special features of the game. For eg, if your popularity rating is only at one, you would need to buy any extra modifications for your car to participate in a competition. With a higher level of popularity, the more points you can gain during the race, allowing you to unlock more vehicles, additional parts, and other items throughout the game. Earning Style Points is important when completing the Underground mode. You're not going to be able to access all the items in the game before you start collecting points of design.

The other modes in NFS Underground are Fast Race and Online mode. Fast racing mode allows you to compete at all of the above-listed meets, Circuit, Sprint Drag, etc. The multiplayer mode allows you to race against other players on the internet. Even if you only want to play in the Short Ride, you can always customize your car. There is a different customization feature that can be used for cars not used in Underground Mode. The amount of customization is minimal, but there was a huge amount of customization possible. This was unexpected since certain racing games need you to play in other competitions or races before you can use customization tools. But the makers of NFS Underground realized that customizing your car was the greatest draw to the game. By racing in Underground Mode, you can unlock additional features that you can use in Fast Race mode.
NFS Underground is a frantic, high paced racing game that appeals to all street-racing enthusiasts. Hardcore racing enthusiasts or purists may be a little overwhelmed by the amount of modification that can be achieved with the cars. But this is really where the fun in the game is, constructing "your" car and continuing to adjust it by winning points of style and money. NFS Underground is a wonderful racing game that can impress every player.
