Maria Josefa Gabriela Silang or better known as "GABRIELA SILANG" was the first Filipino woman who lead a rebellion during the Spanish colonization of the Philippines.
We used to think of women as just being at home to serve and take care of her family. But, at the time we were deprived of Independence in our own country. There is an Ilocana woman locally known as, Maria "GABRIELA SILANG".
When her husband Diego Silang died, she continued what her husband was fighting for. She was born as Maria Josefa Gabriela Cariño Silang on 19 March 1731 in Caniogan, Ilocos Sur (Santa, Ilocos Sur). She married against her will when she was just a minor. All those events were his father's will. Gabriela's father's wish was fulfilled when Gabriela's husband's wealth went to her when she died and she was early widowed. A few years passed and Gabriela married Diego Silang. Diego fought valiantly against the Spaniards and liberated Vigan. They lived in Vigan from September, 1762, until Diego's death and his widowhood again. Diego Silang's failed struggle he bravely continued. But unfortunately, his force was lost against thousands of Spanish forces and the lack of interest of the English when a treaty was signed at the end of the Seven Years War in Paris in February 1763. Gabriela was arrested and hanged on 20 September. 1763. She was called "FIRST WOMAN GENERAL" and "FIRST WOMAN MARTYR" because of her courage and bravery for the sake of the people. Her courage inspired the founding of the GABRIELA political party.
