The importance of Filipino games in the lives of the young, not only in the development of socio-emotional and cognitive aspects of children, but also in instilling the sense of community, nationhood, and love for the indigenous Filipino culture. Filipinos are very creative and idealistic when it comes to the things they want.
Have you ever wondered what your parents were playing way back when gadgets and online games are still not "in"?Nothing can beat the traditional Filipino games, not tablets or any gadget.
We were lucky as kids because we got to play all kinds of games which kids of these days no longer do (I don't think they even know how to play those kinds of games.) Our favorites were playing habulan, taguan (hide and seek), patintero, piko, holen, tumbang preso, takyan, nagpapalipad ng saranggola (kite flying), and shatong or syatong (Philippine games in general usually played by kids or youngsters).
Shatong/Shato/Syato/Shatung (whatever) - A Stick Game
Stick game, better be good at it - Two players, one flat stick (usually 3') and one short flat piece of wood (4" usually a piece cut from the flat stick).
Player A hitter and Player B as the catcher. Played outside on the ground where you dig a small square hole (slanted) where you put the small wood so it sticks out.
Player A hits the wood with the stick so it catches air enough to be hit by the stick.
The further the wood gets hit the more points you get (usually counted by the number of stick length
Player B on the other hand has to anticipate and catch the small piece of wood to nullify the points and become his turn OR looks forward to Player A to miss hitting the wood.
I used to play this game when I was a kid and I usually won but ...once I lose, I am prepared for a vocal exercise...shaaaatong!!!
Note: Number of players: 2 teams with at least two players but you can play it as singles as well.
This game is common in Southeast Asian countries. The objective of the game is to capture more seeds than one's opponent. All we need are pebbles or seashells.
We need 49 pieces of shells or pebbles. It would be better if you have extra pebbles just for a reserve but the game only requires 49- 7 pieces on each hole. The 2 bigger holes which will serve as a home for each of the players will remain empty at the beginning of the game.
Playing SUNGKA practices your mathematical and analytical skills. Also, it requires good eye-hand coordination as well as teaches sportsmanship. Teaching your children and passing it to the generation after them is the best way to preserve our culture and tradition.
A local game wherein boys attempt to kick a shuttlecock-looking TAKYAN which is basically made from a washer-like weighted flat object with plastic strips as its stabilizer. They would wear their slippers on the sides of their feet and use this area for striking or kicking the "shuttlecock" again and again and again, in fact, the game is about the most kicks made. A popular old-time "analog" kids pastime because it's easy to make, challenging, and really fun.
These games do not only provide enjoyment to Filipino children but, more importantly, facilitate their learning and relating to their fellow Filipinos. These games shape and hone their minds as well as instill the genuine value of savoring victory and graciousness in times of defeat.
