“So,” Peter said suddenly, speaking in one of his sarcastic tones, “what do you think of Aurora?”.
Alex eyes leapt from his friend to the floor at the mention of Aurora’s name, embarrassed by the heat that rose in his cheeks.
“I don’t know,” he replied casually, “she’s sweet”.
Bursting out with laughter, Peter stopped walking and put a hand on Alex’s bag.
“You’re talking absolute nonsense mate; you do realise that she likes you, don’t you?”
By the coy way that Alex shrugged Peter’s hand from his bag and continued walking, it was clear that he knew, and obviously felt the same towards her. He wasn’t going to let Peter know though.
“No, she doesn’t”.
A girl who’d been walking past as Peter started laughing gave them both a confused look.
“See something you like?” Peter asked flirtingly, not the slightest bit nervous.
“Keep dreaming loser,” she replied, not waiting for a response before marching off to her next class.
Turning back to Alex, a mischievous look in his eyes, he laughed again.
“She wants me mate; she just hasn’t realized it yet”.
This time, Alex laughed too, knowing full well that the girl would never be interested in Peter. His friend had always been open minded when it came to girls, knowing they would likely pass him by without a second glance, but still having the confidence to flirt with them anyway. Alex put it down to his Stormball genes; none of them lacked for confidence. He, however, couldn’t talk to a girl if his life depended on it, something that Peter regularly chastised him for.
“Oh, would you look at that,” Peter said, smirking as they arrived at Mr Troll’s physics lesson, “it’s like she knew you were coming”.
Aurora sat at the back of the classroom, books out the desk and two free tables sat beside her. She waved as they entered the room, signalling that the seats beside her were saved for them.
“Try and say more than a few words to her this time won’t you mate?” Peter Joked, noting that Alex hadn’t found it the least bit funny, “just relax and you’ll be fine”.
As they sat down, one to either side of Aurora, an eccentric little man with bushy brown hair welcomed them to their first physics class of the new year. Mr Troll was everything that Mrs Kinker was not; his energy felt throughout the classroom. Reading the students names from a large register to check attendance, he stopped when he got to Aurora.
“Now who is this then,” he said to himself, loud enough for the entire class to hear, “We have a new girl. Welcome Aurora”.
For the second time that day, every eye was turned towards Aurora, Alex, and Peter, scrutinizing the three of them. Alex felt even more uncomfortable than he had in Mrs Kinker’s history class. Sat at the back of the classroom with nobody behind meant every stare found its mark; he had nowhere to hide. Mr Troll continued reading out the register, having to repeat Alex’s name twice when he didn’t respond the first time. Giving the classroom a big gleaming smile, Mr Troll spoke.
