Importancia de la lectura
La lectura es un instrumento de gran valor para la formación integral del ser humano. La escuela debe tener esto muy presento, porque cuando se emplea la lectura como simple instrumento para adquirir conocimientos se desvirtúa su verdadera finalidad.
La lectura contribuye a lograr los grandes objetivos de la educación. De igual manera contribuye al logro de los objetivos específicos así como de aquellos de mediano alcance.
Con todo, la lectura no es un fin en si misma; es solamente un medio cuyo valor depende del uso que de ella se haga. En armonía con este criterio podríamos afirmar que la enseñanza de la lectura, es como toda enseñanza, un serio problema ético.
En efecto, ¿De que sirve la lectura cuando se emplea para acendrar odios entre los humanos, para exaltar la vulgaridad, para promover el vicio?
La lectura utilizada como instrumento formativo aparta al hombre de los vicios, de la hipocresía, de la venalidad, de la vulgaridad y, sobre todo, del tedio y de la angustia. De una buena lectura el hombre resurge consolado, optimista y dispuesto a continuar su lucha.
Los educadores de todos los niveles no deben olvidar que el objetivo fundamental de la lectura es la comprensión de lo leído, pero es necesario tener presente que la comprensión no es un proceso fácil, por cuanto encierra cuando menos cuatro aspectos: interpretación, valoración, ordenación y memorización, cada uno de los cuales requiere ejercitación permanente y atención esmerada por parte de los educadores.
El cobrar conciencia sobre la importancia de la lectura es tan necesario como el cobrar conciencia sobre la complejidad de su enseñanza-aprendizaje.
El acto de leer incluye procesos como los siguientes:
- Reconocimiento visual de los símbolos.
- Integración de los símbolos en la lectura.
- Asociación de las palabras con su significado.
- Comparación de lo leído con nuestras propias ideas para aceptarlo o rechazarlo.
- Aplicación de lo aceptado a la diaria acción.
Hay una realidad que no deben perder de vista los maestros de la escuela primaria. Se trata de que los alumnos que no obtienen en los primeros grados una sólida formación lectora tienen un bajo rendimiento en los pensum de Educación media y superior. Ello se debe a que en tales niveles los programas se desarrollan esencialmente en base a lectura.
Finalmente, la lectura mantiene tanto al hombre como la mujer actualizados en el presente, le permite la reflexión sobre el pasado y hace posible la proyección hacia el futuro, cuando se ha adquirido la madurez suficiente como para leer y comprender a los visionarios.
Importance of reading
Reading is an instrument of great value for the integral formation of the human being. The school must have this very present, because when reading is used as a simple instrument to acquire knowledge, its true purpose is distorted.
Reading contributes to the achievement of the great objectives of education. In the same way, it contributes to the achievement of specific objectives as well as those of medium range.
However, reading is not an end in itself; it is only a means whose value depends on the use made of it. In harmony with this criterion, we could affirm that the teaching of reading, like all teaching, is a serious ethical problem.
In fact, what is the use of reading when it is used to stir up hatred among humans, to exalt vulgarity, to promote vice?
Reading, used as a formative instrument, moves man away from vices, hypocrisy, venality, vulgarity and, above all, from boredom and anguish. From a good reading, man emerges comforted, optimistic and ready to continue his fight.
Educators at all levels must not forget that the fundamental objective of reading is the understanding of what is read, but it is necessary to keep in mind that understanding is not an easy process, since it involves at least four aspects: interpretation, evaluation, ordering, and memorization, each of which requires permanent exercise and careful attention on the part of educators.
Becoming aware of the importance of reading is as necessary as becoming aware of the complexity of its teaching-learning.
The act of reading includes processes such as the following:
- Visual recognition of symbols.
- Integration of the symbols in the reading.
- Association of the words with their meaning.
- Comparing what we read with our own ideas to accept or reject it.
- Application of the accepted to the daily action.
There is a reality that elementary school teachers should not lose sight of. It is that students who do not obtain a solid reading education in the first grades have a low performance in the middle and higher education curricula. This is due to the fact that at these levels the programs are essentially developed on the basis of reading.
Finally, reading keeps both men and women up to date in the present, allows them to reflect on the past and makes it possible to project into the future, when they have acquired sufficient maturity to read and understand visionaries
