Weird Hungarian Expressions and Proverbs #2

in blurtep •  3 years ago

I must say I rather enjoy this new trend by @clixmoney;
Sharing expressions and proverbs from your language.

I don't speak Hungarian very often. In fact i often go for weeks without saying a single word in Hungarian.
I even think and dream in English.

So this is a great challenge for me to return to my roots a bit more.

Today I am sharing a very commonly used expression:

Bagoly mondja verèbnek, hogy nagyfejű.

The literal translation of this is "The owl tells the sparrow, that it has a big head."

We use this expression, in situations in which someone accuses someone else of a fault, when they actually are making the same or sometimes even bigger fault or mistake.
Like when someone criticizes you, but they are themselves guilty of that same thing.

An example of it's use:
Both @ultravioletmag and myself spend a lot of time on Blurt these days. . .So if she was gonna tell me: "Petra, you spend way too much time on Blurt, you should really do more real life stuff, or work, and spend less time on your electronics."
I would probably say to her "Bagoly mondja verèbnek, hogy nagyfejű." As she is literally just as guilty of spending hours on her electronics these days
.😅

The English would probably use "The pot calling the kettle black." in the same scenario.

Do you have any weird, funny, strange expressions or proverbs you wanna share?

very good one. I notice that often. For example someone telling me don't upvote yourself, while he's upvoting himself. Or even worse, having many other accounts to upvote himself. I'll not tell the name of course. Just your expression inspired me to blur it out. ☺ lol

Hopefully they will see this and recognize their 'big head' 😅

LOL. Good one. I have sparrows in my backyard and I once saw an owl years ago. I can imagine these talking to each other. 😭
