Well if you have homebrew installed it’s a total breeze!
brew tap NebulousLabs/siastream https://gitlab.com/NebulousLabs/siastream.git
And then after that it’s just brew install siastream
That’s the easiest way to get going but you can download the binaries as well and if you are using node/npm it’s as easy as doing npm I -g siastream
Alright, so what is this, why do we need it and why is it awesome?
Well for me personally it changes up the way I sync and share media with my partner when we want to watch something together, not only that it means we can unshackle ourselves from using torrent technology to sync files up using our main computers and actually just end up use this decentralised platform to serve up our media.
Big plus? It’s CHEAP, real cheap compared to using amazon or google cloud (tbh, I probably wouldn’t put my media files there anyway for many reasons) not only that, what’s even better about it being backed by the Sia coin is that you can actually do pretty well out of it if you have a direct connection to the web and a decent internet connectivity backhaul (I’d say at least a 25mb/24mb partition of your existing internet for it, don’t forget to rate limit it!)
You see it’s too way, you can both host about 1tb for about $3.99 a month which is massively cheaper compared to the others but you could EARN Sia coin for putting together a big raided array of hard drives and a dedicated machine for storage/hosting of those files — if your are a native computer user and can build fast storage systems you could do quite well out of the demand that’s about to hit this new platform.
SiaStream is the first cloud streaming solution that is fully under your control. Never again worry about being deplatformed.
That’s a brave statement, but also opens up some thoughts about what could come next with this, imagine being able to host your own video files and making them public, or better what about using it as a source to be able to pin those video files onto dtube and lbry, your storage, under your control, decentralised — perfection! — then you just plug it into the audience you want to see it on the platforms you frequent.
I’m currently in the process of getting it setup, seeing what I need, setting up a sia wallet, buying some sia, getting a raspberry pi 4 as a plex server and connecting that to the storage, I’ll let you know how I get on with it all and come back to you with some further setup instructions and what I’ve learned as I step through.
Exciting stuff! ;)
