The current pandemic has been compared in many ways to a world war, only without launching any missiles or bullets. And it is well known that in times of war what has to do with advances in technology and health are generated more quickly. Such is the case of what I want to comment on this occasion.

We know that everyone is at risk of infection from Covid.19, but the personnel most likely to be exposed are health care workers, doctors and nurses.

They are the ones who are permanently exposed to the disease, because they have to monitor the patients, regardless of their condition, but, a possibility of less exposure has arisen, to remotely monitor the patients who are infected by the Coronavirus but do not need intensive therapy, that is, those patients who are stable and their treatment can be done from home, or those who have overcome the disease and have been discharged.

When this happens, it means that the patient must go to the health center with some frequency in order to monitor the symptoms, and expose himself to increasing his viral load, and even infect others in the process, including health personnel.

Well, they have created a gadget called Emerald, which is a device similar to a wifi router (large), which should be placed on the wall of the house or room where the patient is to be monitored.

What does it measure?

This system controls the patient's breathing patterns, movements and sleep. All at a distance, without the need for health care personnel to be exposed, minimizing or making the risks of infection almost nil.

But here's a question that probably fills most people with curiosity...

How does he do it?

Well, this is where the magic of the system lies and the benefit that the correct use of technology can bring is made clear. The system works as follows:

This device emits wireless signals (such as wifi, imperceptible) that are going to give in the patient. Once this occurs, the system uses artificial intelligence to analyze the data it receives and infers what the breathing frequency is, what the sleep patterns and movement of the person are.

This works kind of like the hearing system of bats, they make a sound, it bounces off the object in front of them and back into their ears, they process the information and they can tell distance, size, and everything in front of them. *And excuse me for talking about bats, but it's the best example I've got hehehe

This innovative system was created by Professor Dina Katabi, and her research group at the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Sciences (CSAIL) of the Ministry of Technological Research, in the United States.

It was initially created to minimize the exposure of health care personnel in the pandemic, but its use can be extended to detect other health problems, such as sleep apnea.
