Mega Man is an action-adventure platform video game developed and published by Capcom of Japan for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1987. It was the first console game made by Capcom which were known for making arcade games. Megaman would later on have many sequels on the NES and other succeeding consoles for its popular gameplay.
Whenever I get to play compilation games available on the NES during the early 1990s, this game was always included in those cartridges along with City Connection (which I already posted about earlier).
The Story
It is the year 200X. 6 robots created by master robot engineer Dr. Light are hacked by tech evil genius Dr. Wily, and go on an evil rampage! Only one robot remains who can put them down and restore world peace: the blue and heroic Mega Man!
The Graphics and Sound
The graphics were pretty good for a late 1980s game. They are a bit detailed and colorful. But the game's backgrounds are boring with only one color dominating.
The game's music is quite memorable. I especially liked the bosses' Cut Man and Fire Man's theme. The sound effects are pretty decent too.
The Gameplay
This gameplay was quite innovative during the late 1980s. At the game's beginning, you can choose which enemy robot boss you want to defeat first. After going through a stage, you reach the robot boss and fight him. After destroying it, you get its special ability permanently. That ability can kill a certain boss quickly if you face that boss with it. . The controls are good. What I do not like is that your character Mega Man slides a bit when you stop running and he climbs ladders slowly. You do buttons "A" for jump and "B" for shooting.
Downside is, the game is pretty hard. Passwords are not available here, so you have to beat the game in one sitting. Also some stages have difficult platforming elements but otherwise, the gameplay is good.
Replay value is not so good. Having no password feature means, you must start always from the beginning. Playing it on an emulator can remedy that because of the instant save feature. Also, there are no secrets in the game, so after you finish it, you won´t have anything worthwhile to search for.
My Verdict
If you are a Mega Man or 2D platform action fan, then you gotta play it to see where its greatness started. There may be a few difficult spots in the game but nothing that could not be overcome with a little practice.
The game itself is fun to play and revisit, as any classic video game should be. I recommend this to anyone who hasn’t played it as one of the true video game classics. But for noobs, I recommend beginning with one of its sequels (6, 2 or 8) for an easier time.
Go play this platforming action classic on the NES or on emulators.
Box art aside, it's a great game with a couple of glitches that make it easier than intended.
Thank you for that input! :D
