Login Issues with blurt.blog Have Been Resolved

in blurtdevelopment •  3 years ago

Off to a Decent Start

After launching the blurt.blog frontend user interface yesterday, the site was running smoothly, or so we thought.

Then Came the Hiccups

First the site went down when someone made an error while trying to update the announcement posts.

That was easy enough to fix and the site came back up as soon as I was able to get to it.

Then a Log In Issue Was Discovered

Then I was informed that it wasn't possible to log in using the traditional method of a username and a private key.

I didn't notice it myself since I use the WhaleVault browser extension to log in and do all my Blurt transactions. And I do recommend it for those of you who use a computer to access Blurt websites. It is a safer option since your keys never leave your browser.

I finally was able to track it down to a change that someone had made unintentionally to the part of the code that handles logins. One line of code was commented out and that was enough to throw the whole thing off.

Quick Fix and More to Come

After correcting the error in the code. I rebuilt the app and did a quick push to blurt.blog with the new fix.

I wanted to get it out as soon as possible so that people can at least log in and use the site.

There are still many things that need to be fixed. Right now it doesn't save your preferences, so any change you make to preferences don't stick and go back to default as soon as you either reload the page or go on to a different page.

The one setting that works is choosing your preferred API node. There are six to choose from. You can look on this page to find out where they are located and if they are operational. You might experience faster browsing of blurt.blog by choosing one that is closest to you.

That's All, Folks!

That's the news for now.
Until next time, I hope you all have a great one!

That was probably my fault. img.blurt.world was working when I first launched blurt.blog.

I think I might have changed the DNS for it by mistake when I was updating the DNS records for imgp.blurt.world when the image proxy is currently running.

I will get it running again eventually.

You can post a URL to your profile image on the settings page at https://blurtwallet.com/@double-u/settings.

That's what I did when I first updated my profile on Blurt. I just copied the one I was using on Hive and Steem before that.

Image upload doesn't work yet, so that's the only option for the moment: to upload to a third party and use the URL.

I noticed that a lot of users had their profile pictures stored on images.blurt.buzz. For a while that was the server being used by blurt.blog and blurt.world. The upload problems happened when blurt.buzz was shut down.

Well done. Good to have this back now.

Wonderful! A thousand thanks to you for your work!
I can now log in directly without any problems.
(At first it did not work today either. But after deleting the cookies it works fine now.)

I still noticed:

The old title pictures are no longer displayed.
E.g. this one, which is stored here:
https://imgp.blurt.world/640x0/https://img.blurt.world/blurt/double-u/d39b08d69f301343b9953cf019379f2e79463d4a.png

After clicking on Vote, a too high amount is still displayed for the now to be cast vote.

But both problems are not as urgent as I think.

Kind regards, @double-u

Edit:

One more little thing I noticed:

In the blog in the list view the title images do not fit into the preview. A section is displayed.

This thing is also not urgent.
I just wanted to let you know.

The old title pictures are no longer displayed.
E.g. this one, which is stored here:

I'm not sure what happened there. It was working yesterday. The server at img.blurt.world is @jacobgadikian's personal server, so we'll have to ask him if he turned it off or something.

After clicking on Vote, a too high amount is still displayed for the now to be cast vote.

I think that one should be easy enough to fix. I'll try to get that done by the end of the week.

In the blog in the list view the title images do not fit into the preview. A section is displayed.

I had not noticed that. Thanks for bringing it up. I'll see if I can figure out how to fix it.

As far as I know, the image proxy is not supposed to crop the images. It only shrinks them to fit inside the specified dimensions.

Thank you very much for your answers!

We are currently hunting now which machine it was. I haven't made any changes.

I guess you wanted to say that to @saboin ;-)

We still haven't found it.

Thank you for all the hard work! I had few witness votes remaining. You got one of them :-)

Thanks! It's very much appreciated.

Thank you. This was a timely fix, as Blurrter now doesn't show older posts (3 months or so it cuts off) nor does it show follow lists. I appreciate the effort you and so many others make here despite the early stages of the project, coupled with the effect this has on valuation. I hope that we will see an adoption/demand soon enough that will see you and the others compensated by the increased demand for your belief and effort on behalf of all of us.

Edited to add: I just noticed my profile pic doesn't show on Blurt blog, but others show for me. Mine does show on Blurtter though.

I just noticed my profile pic doesn't show on Blurt blog.

It doesn't show because your profile image was saved on images.blurt.buzz, and that server no longer exists. You can update your profile image on Blurtwallet by going into the settings page and updating your profile picture URL. You can't upload a picture right now since upload doesn't work yet.

You can do like I did and just go to your Steemit wallet settings page and copy the URL from there. It will pull your Steem profile picture.

Mine does show on Blurtter though.

That's because Blurtter pulls profile images from the Steemit image server, so it shows your Steem profile image on Blurtter. Those who don't have a Steem account or don't have a profile picture on their Steem account don't see they profile pictures on Blurtter.
