Blurt Infrastructure Upgrades | Dev Update 2021-11-29

in blurtdevelopment •  3 years ago

I've done some updates on the Blurt infrastructure and just wanted to make a quick post to inform everyone.

In my last post I said the notifications were going down for some upgrades. They are back up and running.

Private RPC Node for the Backend

While the notifications server was down, I installed a private RPC node that serves the notifications server as well as the backends for blurt.blog, blurtwallet.com, and the image uploader.

This should speed up certain things and also prevent the site from going down completely in the event that the main RPC nodes go down for whatever reason.

Since the RPC that I put up is not accessible to the public, it should be able to handle its job without a problem.

Public RPC Server Upgrades

I have upgraded the servers for the public RPC nodes. They should be able to handle more requests and I'm hoping that it won't go down like it did a few times in the past few days.

Draft Clearing Issue Resolved

@tekraze tackled the issue where the text for your previous post was still in the post editor even after you had posted it successfully.

It now correctly clears the draft once a post has successfully been posted.

Updated Hive-Engine Links in the Side Panel

The links in the side panel for Hive-Engine, LeoDex, and Tribaldex have been updated to point to the new SWAP.BLURT market.

Updated Known Exchanges

@eastmael has updated the list of known exchanges in the wallet app so that it gives a warning about including a memo when you send BLURT to known exchanges. This is to remind you that you need to include a memo whenever you send to an exchange. That way, your fund will go to the correct place and it will save you the trouble of contacting the exchange's tech support to track down your BLURT.

Updated FAQ Page

@rycharde has updated the FAQ page. Now the information in there is accurate and you can read up if you have any questions.

Do let us know if you find any errors so we can fix it.

More Community Operated RPC Nodes

If you go to your settings page, you will notice that we have added more alternative nodes that you can choose from. These are nodes that are operated by community members to help make Blurt more resilient.

That's All, Folks!

That'll be it for this one.

Until next time, I hope you all have a great one!

Hopefully this will be a great solution for the recent downtime.

I'm not sure who was responsible for the redirect to Twitter, but I wanted to thank the team for listening to the complaints of the last year on leaving us in the dark when we would go down. The speed with which the foundation took measures to inform us was impressive. Thank you.

I'm not sure if it is related to this or not, but starting early this morning I find myself unable to find my blog here at Blurt Blog on search. It only offers me Hive links which are a year or more older now. One post I had was first in search (a Blurt/Hive comparison) for many months, even last week when I checked. Now no search engine thinks it exists.

I'm hopeful this is due to the upgrade and will fix itself, and not from a more nefarious reason. I say this because I find it not so convenient that in the last week, nodes went down, one is hard pressed to find Blurt at Hive Engine and must jump through hoops and now search is being affected.

I urge everyone to save the link to their blog instead of relying on search. For security reasons this is best anyway, as you know you can trust the link you saved.

I have no dev skills to contribute so I am pumping the Robinia swap pools full of liquidity.

How is Canada ? 🙂

Canada has been cold these past couple of weeks. It has reached as low as -12 degrees Celsius last week.

Merry Christmas to you Saboin 🎉

Thank you very much! And a merry Christmas to you, too!

Hi @saboin,

Is there someway we can make a simple but quick cell phone app for posting, commenting and upvoting?

Since the RPC that I put up is not accessible to the public, it should be able to handle its job without a problem.

Thank you for securing the sovereign state of affairs on Blurt in the net neutrality debacle @saboin. The effort is not unnoticed.

Thank you @eastmael for your contribution to the security of transactions on the Blurt network.

Thank you @rycharde for the landing page for me to direct all the noobs to who will be asking as soon as I mention how much ROI there is on blurt.

Do you know how many different network providors and datacenters are used by the public nodes?

The ones run by the foundation are in Finland. Mine is in the US. Some are in Germany. I think a lot of them are on Contabo because it's the best deal around. Some are on Hetzner.

That's what I was scared of(little diversity). Would you be able to let me know the data usage(TBs transferred) by your and the main public node so I can see where I should put one up to help increase diversity on network providors.

Yeah its really nice specifications. Hope it will works faster and bring more @saboin

The main RPC cluster has four of these behind a Caddy reverse proxy/load balancer.

You did a good job.

I experienced the issue where the text for my previous post was still in the post editor even after I had posted it successfully. Now clear.

The text for my previous post was useful in the post editor even after I had posted it successfully. That was because I had to post a similar contents. Ha ha ha. That is okay now.

We will eventually add templates and snippets to help in situations where you like to reuse certain parts in all your posts.

Dunno if quicker to code, but adding a signature text box would be useful to some :-)

Yeah. That one could stay the same between posts. It would be your post's footer. I like that idea.

Thanks in advance. Have a nice day.

Congratulations @saboin and the entire team, you are doing an excellent job, thank you for all the dedication. I love seeing all the improvements, now we have better support against any unexpected. This is very good news.

Well that's a big relief, thanks for upgrading

Thanks for the update man 👍
I noticed that when upvoting a post, in 50% of the time, the vote doesn't "pass" and I have to revote again...
A temporary issue?

I'll have to track down the issue with that. It could be the reverse proxy/load balancer that is causing the problem. I'm not 100% sure where the issue happens.

  ·  3 years ago  ·   (edited)

You change/adapt something? Right now (touch wood 😁) it seems to work well...

EDIT: hmm...talked to soon...Transaction broadcast error.

Yeah. It seems to happen at random that a node will either not respond or it will respond with an empty reply. I do get the same errors from Hive nodes when I look at the logs for my auto-vote bot, so I think it might be a quirk of graphene nodes in general. I'm not sure if it happens more with Blurt nodes or not.

I also have a bot running on both chaines... in my case it happens more on Blurt. On hive it's mostly in the weekends...I suppose when some amateur-programmers (like me 😂) have time to work on their scripts 😂

Very good for adding RPC servers, considering that Blurt users are increasing every day, I really hope that RPC capacity will increase in the future, so that something like yesterday doesn't happen again.

Great! Thank you very much!
