Hi Blurtians, how you doing?. Wanna share with you this moment verbal demonstration of fluoride application therapy using fluoride varnish type such as Duraphat(a common fluoride type) and the rest.

The fluoride varnish is actually used in patients who are under 6 years of age due to their inability to control the swallowing in their throat as swallowing act as a reflex because the tissues is not yet totally developed in them. Swallowing of fluoride could be harmful to a child's health and even might lead to complications such as fluorosis and as such using fluoride gel in paediatric patients less than 6 years won't be appropriate. This brings about the use of fluoride varnish type.

Now let's commence the answering procedure right away
1- Introduction first such as;

Good morning ma/sir, my name is wxyz and I want to verbally demonstrate fluoride therapy application using fluoride varnish.

I will first greet the patient and the parents or guardian(care-giver), explain the procedure to them, after which I will take consent from both of them.

2- Mentioning the needed armamentarium for the procedure such as saying;

I will need my face mask, gloves, fluoride varnish (Duraphat), applicator brush, cotton wool rolls, rubber dam and its components gauze and suction tip and its storage cylinder

After sitting the patient on a disinfected dental chair, I will remove debris and particles remnants with a water jet and also ask the patient to rinse the mouth follow by isolation.

I will isolate the set of teeth to be worked on, preferably with a rubber dam if present or with cotton rolls and gauze so as to achieve a wet-free area and for an effective treatment.

Furthermore, I will dry all the surfaces of the teeth with the air jet or air spray

Moreso, I will use the applicator brush to apply the fluoride varnish on all surfaces of the teeth ensuring adequate penetration of fluoride varnish particles into the teeth.

Lastly, I will leave it to set for about 3-4 minutes and then repeat the procedure for about 2-3 times for adequate and effective coverage and penetration so as to yield the required therapy.

Once getting this done, I will remove the cotton wool rolls/gauze or rubber dam sheets and other equipment and give the patient post operative and follow up instructions

The post operative instructions include;
No drinking or rinsing for 30 minutes, no eating for 1 hour. This will improve binding mechanism of fluorides to the tooth and give an overall effective treatment.

The patient should be recalled like a week for a checkup of the aforementioned therapy.
That's all as regards fluoride varnish therapy in paediatric patients.

Stay Blessed and Happy Blurting
