Something to keep us going this new week, Blurts really getting interesting and glad to be here.
I was discussing with some friends today about humility and hospitality. The question is that: Does showing hospitality mean you are humble?
In Genesis 18:1-18, Abraham was a great man. He had many servants and people working for him. Yet, look at the great care he showed in greeting and serving three unknown strangers. For though he would soon discover that one of the men passing by his tent was his Lord, he did not realize this when he sprang from his seat and begged them to rest and be refreshed. He did not think the act of serving these men beneath him, nor did he demand that they honor him for the meal – or even offer to let him join them. Instead, he took the posture of a servant and stood beside them waiting to meet any need they may have.
It is so easy to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to. In fact, self-centeredness is one of the plagues of our generation. Abraham’s actions remind us that even the most prominent, wealthy, and deserving of respect have a duty to live as a servant. In John 13:15, after Jesus took on the role of lowly servant and washed his disciples’ feet, Jesus said, “For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.” And Philippians 2:3-4 records Paul’s instructions, “Do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
What a blessing to be given an opportunity to show yourself to be a servant of God! Our words and our labels can only go so far. It is our actions that define our faith to those who encounter them. Hebrews 13:16 tells us, “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” God provides for all our needs. Sometimes, He provides for the needs of others through us. Let us learn from Abraham who didn’t see himself as too important to humbly share and honor others. Let us show, not only our love but also, our trust in God’s provisions by sharing without complaining. Let us learn to see hospitality as a honor and being a servant as the highest calling we could have.
It is very right to show hospitality to each other but then humility is a virtue everyone must pray to have.
Love you guys, love you Blurts.
