White-dron is a species of Leucus genus in the Lamiaceae family. Although in different regions of the world where it grows, it is known by different names. Its scientific name is Leucas aspera and in Bengali it is called Shwetadrona, Dhulfi, Dulpi, Dankals, Chhota Halkusha, Dandkals, Dulfi Shak, Dal Kals, Dhubri, Dor Kals, Kan Shisha, Kaun Shisha, Dhurap Shak.
Among the Munda tribals of Moulvibazar tea plantations, this vegetable is known as Durpi. The Hajong tribals of Netrakona call the vegetable Dongklai and Damkals. Dhulfi is better known as a medicinal plant and weed in Bangladesh and India. However, in Tripura and Assam, India, young plants are eaten as a vegetable.
This tree blooms more or less throughout the year. Leaves are long, obverse thin and grooved. The stem is much knotted. Two leaves emerge from each node. Trees are light and fragile. As the flowers contain honey, the flowers are visited by various types of ants in the morning immediately after the flowers bloom. The sweet taste of honey is felt when the flower is pulled like a straw in the mouth.
People use this vegetable more and more around the plantations of Pahari and Sylhet. Many people in the plains also eat the young stems and leaves of Shvetdrona as a vegetable. Bengali Hindus in Sylhet area eat these vegetables during the Shyama Puja called 'Attita'.
Apart from shrubs, this plant is grown as a weed in rapeseed fields. Stem and leaves are used in herbal medicine. This plant is very useful for rheumatism, cold-cough, flatulence, indigestion, bee bite, rakshapata and to avoid excessive bleeding during menstruation in girls. Its English name is Wite Verticilla and its scientific name is Leucus apera.
