Bitter gourd is a crop suitable for hot and humid climates. It is a tolerant plant. Its yield is possible even in fairly dry climates. Bitter gourd cannot tolerate waterlogging. Again, excessive rainfall can disrupt pollination. Bitter gourd can be cultivated at any time of the year in Bangladesh except for one or two months of winter. The growth rate of plants also slows down in winter. For good yield of bitter gourd, loam or clay loam soil rich in organic matter with full sun and adequate provision is best for its cultivation.
Soaking seeds in water for 15-20 hours before sowing improves germination. It is better if seedlings are produced in polybags in the nursery, in which case polybags of 8-10 cm or larger size can be used. First fill the polybag with half soil and half dung. One seed should be sown in each bag. The seeds should be buried under twice the size of the soil. If seedlings are planted in polybags, the seedlings should be planted in the main land after 16-17 days of germination.
Also the seeds can be planted directly in the soil by preparing the soil.
