The importance of trees cannot be overemphasized. Trees beautify the environment with their colourful leaves. Some trees are Fruit bearing trees or flowering plants. There are trees that give out good scents and there are trees which serve as wind breakers and by wind breakers I mean they wage the violent force of the wind. My compound Is adorned with different kinds of plants as a matter of fact we have a garden in our large compound. Mostly Fruit bearing trees and the rest are Flowering Plants. I have noticed that the air is way cleaner in our garden because of the trees, they also serve as shades from the hot sun, it is as cool as staying in an air conditioned room.
I will give you a run down of some of the trees in my house and their importance:
Pear Tree
The pear tree is the biggest and largest tree in our garden in terms of size and serve as a wind breaker. Its branches adorned with green leaves spread so wide and serve as good shades to relax under during the hot afternoon. Just like it's named it produces pears. At first the pears appear as small buds which grows to pinkish fruits which turns black when ripe, all these happens within the month of July and August. The Pear Tree is so wide and suitable for tree climbing. Tree climbing is fun when you have a large tree 😉
Grape Tree
A sweet-sour fruit from the citrus family. The grape tree has slim branches with green yellowish round fruits like a round ball. The grape tree has yellowish green leaves while the grape fruit has a smooth skin that's green when it is unripe and the inside is white but when it ripes the skin turns yellow and the inside succulent red, one bite and the juice rushes down your lips. The sour taste comes after licking the fruit and you drink water. The leaves of the grape tree and the skin of the grape fruit can be boiled and the water extracted for its medicinal purpose. You can make grape juice as well.
Banana Tree
They may look alike but it's not exactly the same type of Banana you purchase in the market. It has a dwarf size and a slight difference in taste. It is called Unyere in Igbo. To grow a Banana plant you need the sucker. The Banana fruit is green when unripe and yellowish when ripe. But harvesting Banana should be done when they are unripe but mature enough, they shouldn't be left on the trees to turn yellow so that they can be preserved.
Mango Tree
We planted this Mango Tree December last year and it has grown to be this big. If you look at the picture below you will notice the Mango buds are sprouting. This is a sign of productivity. For now it has only only one Mango Fruit on the tree. The tree is full with green leaves, this means the plant is healthy and the soil is fertile.
Orange Tree
The orange tree is not within our garden but it still makes up one of the most important trees in our compound. Our Orange Tree produces more fruit than any other plant. Green barks when unripe then it turns yellow when ripe. It's also part of the citrus family.
The rest of the trees are Flowering Plants which beautify our compounds and they come in different colors.
The tallest flowering plant stands in the center of our garden. It looks like a Christmas tree, sadly this year the whole leaf turned brown due to termite infestation. The stem already has fungus growing on it.
Conclusion
Trees are very important for the environment, they absorb carbondioxide and give out oxygen thus keeping the air we breathe in cleaner. They also serve as good habitats for insects and birds. Recently we have seen an increase in the call to plant more trees so as to combat climate change. This goes on to show that trees are essential for the survival of our ecosystem.
