After her friend was struck by a car, her telepathic powers came to life and connected to her friend's mind and suffered with her as she passed away. After this, she was in such shock her body could not move this is also known as catatonia.
After her parents took her to see Charles Professor X-Men, that's when confirmed and informed them that she is a mutant, he recommends she stay at the school so she can learn how to use her powers.
