Cleveland's Jerry Siegel and Joey Schuster are the creators of Superman, the pioneers of these superheroes who are very popular in the world of pop culture today. Jerome and Joey were both born in 1914. Although Seagal was born in Cleveland, his family immigrated from Russia. Shaster, of Dutch-Ukrainian descent, saw the light of day in Toronto, Canada. When his family moved to Cleveland, he was admitted to Glenville High School. There he met Jerry Seagal. Both were shy and interested in adventure and science fiction pulp magazines such as Amazing Stories, Weird Tales and comic books; Especially Buck Rogers, Tarzan and Papaya. So it didn't take long for the friendship to form. They first worked together in the school newspaper, where Jerry wrote the story and Joey drew the picture. From there, the two started dreaming about comics. However, the Great Depression of 1929 stood in the way of that dream.
