Red Hood and the Outlaws #1 is a ongoing series from DC Comics. We follow Jason Todd, Roy Harper and Koriand’r, AKA Starfire as they help bust roy out of jail in the country of Quarac.
As a fan of Jason Todd, I like how they’ve given him his own series. He’s also come out of his angsty rut he’s been stuck in for a long time when it comes to the writers.
Roy’s character seems the same except that he now sleeps with Starfire too. I don’t really care for his character so I don’t think he’s changed too much. He does seem to care about her though.
Starfire, poor, poor Starfire has been derailed completely from what she used to be. She was a strong character with loyalty to her friends and she cared about others. Now she’s a brainless killing machine with the attention span of a two year old and must sleep with any male she sees, and she can’t remember her friends or any of the Teen Titans, it’s not so much that she sleeps with men, it’s just that she can’t remember her friends, and I don’t like that. This is not the character I’ve read in the comics. She’s been derailed horribly. She’s rude and uncaring and a slut, so I don’t like what Scott Lobdell has done to her character, even if the rest of his writing is solid, other than Starfire’s characterization. I’ve heard this first arc is about her, so hopefully, it’ll get better. Thankfully, I’m reading for Jason and not for Starfire.
I think the artwork is gorgeous. Kenneth Rocafort does a fantastic job with this issue. I like the character designs and Jason’s look is very cool to look at. The coloring by Blond is also good so even if you don’t like the characters or the story, the artwork is worth paying for. It looks great.
Note to parents, there’s a lot of fanservice in this comic. It takes up at least three pages, there’s also some language and violence, this is rated T for Teens.
Overall, I do recommend this comic if you like Jason. If you like Roy and Starfire, you might want to stay away. But if you’re looking for a solid, fun action oriented comic, pick up Red Hood and the Outlaws #1. It’s a good starting point, not the best, but it’s a whole lot better than what’s been happening to Jason in other comics.
