The Last God. Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Writer: Riccardo Federici, Artist: Mat Lopes, Arif Prianto, Sunny Gho, Colorists
The scale of The Last God eclipses almost the rest at DC, and that’s both this book’s biggest strength and sometimes its biggest weakness. The Last God takes place almost entirely within the huge spire that holds the secrets to the plague of the Flowering Dead, and continues to separate its story between the 2 timelines.
In the past, the heroes search out answers on the source of the plague, while within the present day the refugees flee for his or her lives and bicker among themselves about who’s accountable. There are such a large amount of subplots and then many character dynamics within the 2 timelines that it’s a bit hard to stay track between the 2, but the writing is top-notch. Johnson’s carefully-plotted out world has its own social dynamics and own bigotries that take a touch working out, but that’s one amongst the strengths of dropping into such a fully-formed world midway through the story.
