Prisoners is a 2013 film directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Prisoners is the bitter parable of a nation that still wonders whether torture is an acceptable means to extort information "essential to national security", and that chases an increasingly elusive and less absolute truth. It is no coincidence that the symbol at the center of the plot is a labyrinth with no apparent way out. And the disturbing component of the film, always ready to cross over into the horror zone, remains inside well after viewing.
However, the excessive length of the film is to the detriment of the incisiveness of the plot, and the substantial budget (or perhaps the greater creative control on the part of the major producer) seems to limit Villeneuve's authorial autonomy, more powerful and compact in The Woman Who Sings . But the iconoclasm of the "foreigner" within a quintessentially Yankee narrative format is interesting and highly provocative.
The stellar cast puts their talent and iconographic value behind this work of demolition of the American (cinematic) myth. The only discordant note is the casting of Melissa Leo in the role of an elderly lady who, visually, draws on a cinematic archetype so well consolidated that it risks the spoiler effect.

The Dover family leads a peaceful life in a quiet town in the state of Pennsylvania, but during the Thanksgiving celebrations the little youngest daughter Anna suddenly disappears into thin air together with her peer Joy Birch, daughter of family friends. Anna's father, Keller, begins the search for the two little girls, focusing his attention from the beginning on a camper that was parked in the area until shortly before her disappearance.
Detective Loki, who was given charge of the case, immediately locates the vehicle and finds the young Alex Jones inside. He suffers from mental retardation and, having deceased parents, is entrusted to his elderly aunt Holly; after hours of interrogation the boy appears to be unrelated to the kidnapping, and is released. Keller, deeply shaken by this news, attacks him, and in the struggle Jones whispers the phrase "They didn't cry until I left them", shocking the man.
Loki leads the investigation into reported pedophiles in and around the area, and cases of missing children. Inspecting the cellar of an alcoholic ex-priest he finds, in a secret room, the mummified corpse of a man: the priest reveals to him that he is an unknown serial killer, who he segregated (and therefore died) because he had revealed to him that having murdered sixteen children. He also investigates a child kidnapped years earlier and never found again; at the community vigil for Anna and Joy a man runs away when he approaches him: the same man who later sneaks into the Birch and Dover homes.
Meanwhile, Keller, sure that Alex Jones knows about the two missing girls, kidnaps the young man in his father's old house, now abandoned and in ruins. Keller is determined at any cost to make Alex talk, even using techniques of torture and violence, which however seem ineffective given that the boy does not confess anything, despite the barbaric methods adopted by Keller becoming more and more violent day after day. Alex decides to speak only during the last torture, which consists of barricading the young man in the bathtub by building plywood walls that limit the light inside and letting scalding or freezing water flow over the boy; finally he says, "I'm not Alex."
Meanwhile, Loki tracks down the suspect who had escaped the night of the vigil, a certain Bob Taylor: the boy is obsessed with labyrinths, which he draws on any surface (including walls) and in his house the detective finds several boxes with live snakes and clothes for bloody children. The Birchs and the Dovers recognize in some of these clothes items that belonged to Joy and Anna, who are therefore believed to be dead. Bob Taylor is taken to the police station to be interrogated but the only thing he does for the next 3 hours is draw a particular type of maze that he himself has never managed to solve; meanwhile detective Loki is tired of waiting and attacks him in the interrogation room while two policemen try to block him. Bob manages to remove a gun from one of the two men's holster and shoots himself in the mouth. Taylor's house is searched by police units and it is discovered that the blood on the children's clothes in the crates actually came from pigs; furthermore it is discovered that Taylor had been held prisoner as a child: he had not really been involved in the kidnapping of the girls, but he had only pretended to do so due to the trauma he suffered. The clothes recognized by the families had therefore been stolen after the incident by Taylor himself, when he had furtively entered the two girls' home.
During a torture, Alex tells Keller the following phrase: "I'm in the labyrinth." The man then goes to see Holly Jones, pretending to want to apologize for the aggressive reaction he had shown towards his nephew upon his release from the police station and mentions the word "labyrinth" to observe the woman's reaction. Meanwhile, Loki recognizes the necklace from the corpse found in the priest's house in the labyrinth designed by Bob Taylor.
