Here Adrienne meets Paul Flanner, an esteemed plastic surgeon, the only guest of the week. An intense friendship is born between the two, which leads Paul to confide in Adrienne about his difficult relationship with his son Mark, about his divorce and about the real reason why he is there: he has to meet the husband of one of his patients who died in the operating room , after the latter sued him. Adrienne also opens up to him, telling him about her children and the difficult period she spent after her husband's betrayal. Meanwhile, a strong hurricane is about to hit Rodanthe, which pushes Paul to immediately look for his patient's husband. The meeting doesn't go as hoped: Paul meets the victim's son who kicks him out badly.
After a few days, while Paul and Adrienne set up hurricane protection, the patient's husband goes to the inn to talk to Paul. At the end of the conversation Paul and Adrienne argue: with the hurricane about to hit the inn, the two return inside furious. The next day, Adrienne realizes that she is in love with Paul. After a few days Adrienne receives a visit from Mark, Paul's son, who tells her that Paul died in Ecuador due to a landslide while she was trying to save him.
