Law Abiding Citizen is, without a doubt, a very entertaining film.

Private Justice is undoubtedly a very entertaining film. In the sense that it keeps the viewer glued to the seat thanks to a triple strategy. It begins as a legal thriller with the difficult relationship between the man of the law and the citizen who cannot accept that full justice is not achieved.

Then it continues, raising expectations about the possible variants, as another episode of Night Watch with Clyde facing his trauma again and Nick trying to bring him back to the realm of rationality. Then it continues and ends up forcing the viewer to exercise the so-called suspension of disbelief at the highest level.

Law Abiding Citizen (titulada Un ciudadano ejemplar en España, El vengador en México y Días de ira en Argentina es, sin duda, una película muy entretenida.

Private Justice es sin duda una película muy entretenida. En el sentido de que mantiene al espectador pegado a la butaca gracias a una triple estrategia. Comienza como un thriller jurídico con la difícil relación entre el hombre de la ley y el ciudadano que no puede aceptar que no se logre una justicia plena.

Luego continúa, creando expectativas sobre las posibles variantes, como un capítulo más de «Vigilancia nocturna» con Clyde enfrentándose de nuevo a su trauma y Nick intentando devolverle al terreno de la racionalidad. Luego continúa y termina obligando al espectador a ejercer la llamada suspensión de la incredulidad al máximo nivel

Clyde Shelton is an engineer working for the US government, but has decided to leave his job to be with his family. His life is turned upside down when two criminals break into his house, beat him up, pin him down and before his eyes one of them rapes his wife, kills her and then also kills his young daughter (the other watches helplessly). The criminals are caught thanks to Shelton's identification, who provides the prosecutor Nick Rice with all possible elements, but during the trial Rice prefers to negotiate to win the case, accepting the death penalty for the innocent accomplice and letting Clarence Darby, the material murderer, go free after only three years in prison. Outside the courtroom, Darby shakes Rice's hand to mock him, while Shelton, from a distance, observes the scene and, mistakenly, questions the integrity of the prosecutor, thinking of a plot he has hatched with Darby and the judge. Rice, oblivious to all this, returns home to his wife and daughter.

Ten years later, the day of the execution of one of the two criminals arrives, and Rice prefers to witness the death sentence rather than his daughter's cello recital. Unexpectedly, the lethal injection is carried out with a corrosive compound, and the executed dies after excruciating suffering. With no alternative, the police set out to find Darby, the real killer from ten years earlier, who is contacted during the escape by a shadowy individual, namely Shelton, disguised as a policeman. The engineer immobilises Darby with a poison that only paralyses his body, leaving his brain functions intact, and takes him to one of his properties, where he tortures him. Administering a saline solution and adrenaline into his vein, he ensures that he remains unconscious so that he feels as much fear and pain as possible during the torture and, finally, he dismembers him.

After filming the whole thing on camera, Shelton sends the footage to Rice's house, making sure that none of it identifies the face of the man dissecting Darby. The police locate Shelton, stark naked, and take him to jail. As there is no irrefutable evidence, Shelton waives his right to be defended by a lawyer and, with a brilliant argument, almost manages to get out on bail. While the amount is being set, Shelton begins to angrily offend the judge (the same judge from the trial who let the murderer of his loved ones go free) and is consequently sent back to prison for offending the court. Here Shelton tries to sell his confessions in exchange for certain privileges, including a fancy meal and a comfortable mattress; Rice accepts and learns of a man buried in a trapdoor, Darby's lawyer, whom he cannot save because he and the agents will be late arriving at the place Shelton has told them about. Meanwhile, Shelton uses the supposed steak bone as a weapon to stab his cellmate and is placed in solitary confinement.

Speaking to Rice, the inmate reveals that he wants to subvert the system, which he claims is not working properly, calling it a ‘biblical event’. Despite the solitary confinement, outside the prison several of Rice's entourage begin to die in traps and sophisticated devices, suggesting possible complicity by Shelton. Rice and the prosecutor manage to contact and meet with a spy and former colleague of Shelton's in the US intelligence service; he reveals that Shelton was the best engineer specialising in devices, weapons and traps in the service of the CIA and that he behaves like a military strategist with great intelligence and tactical skills. His goal, therefore, is to put the city of Philadelphia in check in order to prove that the system does not work. In conclusion, the spy advises to do his best to stop him.

Meanwhile, the attacks continue: Rice's colleagues, including his deputy Sarah, are killed in the explosion of their cars, triggered by a remote control device nearby; as they leave the funeral, some of the survivors are attacked by a hand-operated machine gun and rocket launcher, and another massacre takes place in which the district attorney is killed. The mayor, furious at the situation and in the media spotlight, promotes Rice to district attorney with the sole objective of stopping Shelton at all costs. Rice is puzzled, but finds an email from Sarah listing Shelton's properties; one in particular catches his attention because it is so close to the jail. Rice and Detective Dunnigan break into this warehouse and discover a secret tunnel that is connected to cells throughout the prison, leading to hiding places with weapons, monitors, disguises and equipment.

From a document, Rice discovers that the next attack will take place at city hall during a meeting attended by the city's top brass. Arriving at the site with Dunnigan, he finds a briefcase with a napalm bomb inside; he returns to the prison and surprises Shelton as he closes the secret passageway. A brief argument begins between the two and in the end Shelton declares that he made his choice anyway and set off the bomb; Rice closes the cell and leaves after telling him that he will live with this choice for the last 25 seconds of his life. Shelton realises shortly afterwards that Rice had placed the bomb under the bed in the cell and cannot even escape through the tunnel, because the passage has been blocked by Dunnigan: the engineer sits on the bed and, looking at his daughter's bracelet, is engulfed in flames. In the epilogue, Rice is shown attending his daughter's concert.

Clyde Shelton es un ingeniero que trabaja para el gobierno de Estados Unidos, pero ha decidido dejar su trabajo para estar con su familia. Su vida da un vuelco cuando irrumpen en su casa dos delincuentes, que le golpean, le inmovilizan y ante sus ojos uno de ellos viola a su mujer, la mata y después también mata a su hija pequeña (el otro observa impotente). Los criminales son capturados gracias a la identificación de Shelton, que proporciona al fiscal Nick Rice todos los elementos posibles, pero durante el juicio Rice prefiere negociar para ganar el caso, aceptando la pena de muerte para el cómplice inocente y dejando libre a Clarence Darby, el asesino material, tras sólo tres años de cárcel. Fuera del juzgado, Darby estrecha la mano de Rice para burlarse de él, mientras Shelton, desde la distancia, observa la escena y, equivocándose, cuestiona la integridad del fiscal, pensando en un complot que ha urdido con Darby y el juez. Rice, ajeno a todo esto, regresa a casa con su mujer y su hija.

Diez años después, llega el día de la ejecución de uno de los dos criminales, y Rice prefiere presenciar la pena capital en lugar del recital de violonchelo de su hija. Inesperadamente, la inyección letal se lleva a cabo con un compuesto corrosivo, y el ejecutado muere tras un sufrimiento atroz. Sin otra alternativa, la policía se dispone a encontrar a Darby, el verdadero asesino de diez años antes, con quien contacta durante la huida un individuo en la sombra, concretamente Shelton, disfrazado de policía. El ingeniero inmoviliza a Darby con un veneno que sólo paraliza su cuerpo, dejando intactas sus funciones cerebrales, y lo lleva a una de sus propiedades, donde lo tortura. Administrándole una solución salina y adrenalina en vena, se asegura de que permanezca inconsciente para que sienta el mayor miedo y dolor posibles durante la tortura y, finalmente, lo descuartiza.

Tras filmarlo todo con una cámara, Shelton envía las imágenes a casa de Rice, asegurándose de que en ninguna de ellas se pueda identificar el rostro del hombre que disecciona a Darby. La policía localiza a Shelton, completamente desnudo, y lo lleva a la cárcel. Como no hay pruebas irrefutables, Shelton renuncia a su derecho a ser defendido por un abogado y, con un brillante argumento, casi consigue salir en libertad bajo fianza. Mientras se fija la cuantía, Shelton empieza a ofender airadamente al juez (el mismo del juicio que dejó libre al asesino de sus seres queridos) y, en consecuencia, es enviado de nuevo a prisión por ofender al tribunal. Aquí Shelton intenta vender sus confesiones a cambio de ciertos privilegios, entre ellos una comida de lujo y un cómodo colchón; Rice acepta y se entera de la existencia de un hombre enterrado en una trampilla, el abogado de Darby, al que no podrá salvar porque él y los agentes llegarán tarde al lugar del que Shelton les ha hablado. Mientras tanto, Shelton utiliza el supuesto hueso del filete como arma para apuñalar a su compañero de celda y es recluido en régimen de aislamiento.

Hablando con Rice, el recluso revela que quiere subvertir el sistema, que según él no funciona correctamente, calificándolo de «acontecimiento bíblico». A pesar del aislamiento, fuera de la prisión varias personas del entorno de Rice comienzan a morir en trampas y sofisticados artefactos, lo que sugiere una posible complicidad de Shelton. Rice y el fiscal consiguen contactar y reunirse con un espía y antiguo colega de Shelton del servicio de inteligencia estadounidense; éste les revela que Shelton era el mejor ingeniero especializado en dispositivos, armas y trampas al servicio de la CIA y que se comporta como un estratega militar con gran inteligencia y habilidades tácticas. Su objetivo es, por tanto, poner en jaque a la ciudad de Filadelfia para demostrar que el sistema no funciona. En conclusión, el espía aconseja hacer de tripas corazón para detenerle.

Mientras tanto, los atentados continúan: algunos colegas de Rice, entre ellos su ayudante Sarah, mueren en la explosión de sus coches, provocada por un mando a distancia que se encuentra cerca; al salir del funeral, algunos de los supervivientes son atacados por una ametralladora y un lanzacohetes accionados manualmente, y se produce otra masacre en la que muere el fiscal del distrito. El alcalde, furioso por la situación y en el punto de mira de la prensa, asciende a Rice a fiscal del distrito con el único objetivo de detener a Shelton a toda costa. Rice está desconcertado, pero encuentra un correo electrónico de Sarah en el que se enumeran las propiedades de Shelton; una en particular le llama la atención porque está muy cerca de la cárcel. Rice y el detective Dunnigan irrumpen en este almacén y descubren un túnel secreto que está conectado con las celdas de toda la prisión y que conduce a unos escondites con armas, monitores, disfraces y equipamiento.

Gracias a un documento, Rice descubre que el próximo atentado tendrá lugar en el ayuntamiento durante una reunión a la que asistirán los altos cargos de la ciudad. Al llegar al lugar con Dunnigan, encuentra un maletín con una bomba de napalm en su interior; regresa a la prisión y sorprende a Shelton mientras cierra el pasadizo secreto. Comienza una breve discusión entre ambos y al final Shelton declara que de todas formas tomó su decisión y activó la bomba; Rice cierra la celda y se marcha tras decirle que vivirá con esta elección los últimos 25 segundos de su vida. Shelton se da cuenta poco después de que Rice había colocado la bomba debajo de la cama de la celda y ni siquiera puede escapar por el túnel, porque el paso ha sido bloqueado por Dunnigan: el ingeniero se sienta en la cama y, mirando la pulsera de su hija, queda envuelto en llamas. En el epílogo, Rice aparece asistiendo al concierto de su hija.
