La Mosca es una película de terror y ciencia ficción de 1986 dirigida por David Cronenberg. La película es un remake de la película de 1958 El experimento del Dr. K y está basada en el relato corto La mosca (La Mouche, 1957) de George Langelaan. La película pertenece al llamado género de «terror corporal». La película se estrenó en los cines estadounidenses el 15 de agosto de 1986.

The Fly is a 1986 science fiction horror film directed by David Cronenberg. The film is a remake of the 1958 film The Dr. K Experiment and is based on the short story The Fly (La Mouche, 1957) by George Langelaan. The film belongs to the so-called ‘body horror’ genre. The film was released in US theatres on 15 August 1986.

La Mosca cuenta la historia de Seth Brundle, interpretado por Jeff Goldblum, que inventa una máquina de teletransporte. El científico decide probarla consigo mismo, pero no se da cuenta de que una pequeña mosca ha entrado en la máquina con él. Brundle cree que el experimento ha tenido éxito, pero pronto se da cuenta de que su cuerpo está evolucionando: se está convirtiendo en una mosca. Además de Guldblum, el reparto también incluye a Geena Davis y John Getz, respectivamente en los papeles de la periodista Veronica Quaife y su editor Stathis Borans.

The Fly tells the story of Seth Brundle, played by Jeff Goldblum, who invents a teleportation machine. The scientist decides to test it on himself, but doesn't realise that a small fly has entered the machine with him. Brundle thinks the experiment has been successful, but soon realises that his body is evolving: he is turning into a fly. In addition to Guldblum, the cast also includes Geena Davis and John Getz, respectively in the roles of journalist Veronica Quaife and her editor Stathis Borans.

The film, which became an absolute cult hit, was a huge success, first with American audiences and then with the rest of the world. The film won the Oscar for Best Makeup in 1987, awarded to make-up artists Chris Walas (later director of the sequel The Fly 2) and Stephan Dupuis. The tagline, ‘Be afraid. Be very afraid. (‘Be afraid. Be very afraid’), became one of the most famous in film history and was the subject of parodies and other homages in numerous situations.

Seth Brundle is a scientist who has built a teleportation machine. The device works well with objects, but is dangerously flawed when teleporting living things.

Seth begins a love affair with Veronica Quaife, a journalist for a well-known science magazine. Inspired by their first sexual encounter, Seth perfects the machine by successfully teleporting a baboon. To celebrate, Seth is eager to have another romantic evening with Veronica, but she refuses. Seth is haunted by the idea that Veronica is planning to rekindle her relationship with her publisher and former lover Stathis Borans.

This idea deeply depresses Seth, who decides, drunk and full of jealousy, to teleport himself with the machine, not realising that he has entered the first capsule with a fly inside. At first nothing seems to be different, until Seth discovers that he has become stronger, tougher and more sexually powerful than a normal man, realising however that he has also become more aggressive and arrogant. Subsequently, his body begins to show increasingly severe signs of disintegration, starting with the loss of hair and teeth and continuing with the shedding of skin. Upon analysing his teleportation data, he discovers that his DNA has fused with that of the fly.

Over the weeks, Brundle continues to deteriorate, becoming physically less human, beginning to transform into a disgusting fly-man, capable of dissolving food with corrosive saliva, climbing walls like the insect itself, and having more animal instincts than human reasoning. Meanwhile, Veronica discovers to her horror that she is expecting Seth's child, so, fearing that the child will be born a mutant, she decides to abort; however, she is kidnapped by Seth who prevents her from having an abortion as he believes that the child may be human and is all that would be left of him, and with this idea he takes her to his laboratory.

Meanwhile, Stathis Borans enters Brandle's empty flat with a rifle, intending to kill the monster, who, however, bursts onto the scene, running him over and melting his left hand and right foot with corrosive saliva. By the woman's will, Brundle does not kill the man. However, Seth has the horrible intention of ‘bonding forever’ with Veronica and the child in her lap by teleporting himself and the machine together. As the woman resists, Seth completes his metamorphosis into a man-monster, renaming himself Brundlemosca.

Thus, the monster violently pushes Veronica into one capsule and then enters the other, but before the teleportation is activated, a rediscovered Stathis manages to fire his rifle at the machine's wires: the capsule containing Veronica is short-circuited and deactivated, but the fusion process begins anyway, mixing Brundlemosca with the cockpit itself. The resulting monstrous being takes one last human glance at Veronica to move her to compassion, grabs her rifle with a claw and, bringing the barrel to her head, demands an end to her suffering: she, at first desperate, turns away from the monster but then shoots her beloved in the head.

Tanto en el extranjero como en el propio país, la película fue recibida positivamente por la crítica cinematográfica. Both abroad and at home, the film was received positively by film critics. The website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 91% of the 41 professional reviews gave the film a positive rating. Film critic Gene Siskel ranked The Fly 10th on his list of the best films of 1986. Many critics, websites and film magazines have called The Fly one of the best horror films ever. In 2005, TIME magazine included it in its list of the 100 greatest films of all time, and also among the 25 greatest horror films of all time.

Many fans of the film were disappointed when they discovered that Jeff Goldblum had not been nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 1987 Academy Awards. Film critic Gene Siskel revealed that Goldblum's non-nomination was due to the Academy's lack of enthusiasm for horror films.

Many critics compared Brundle's metamorphosis into a fly to AIDS. On this comparison, the director stated: ‘If you or your lover has AIDS, you see the film and you see AIDS in it, necessarily, but you don't have to live through it to respond emotionally to the film and I think that's where its power lies. The love story, of course, although not very developed, is moving because of the talent of the actors, who are eccentric; certainly the love story adds some emotion.
