I say 'Happy New Year', 'Happy Birthday', even 'Happy Diwali'. But why is it called 'Merry Christmas' when it comes to Christmas greetings? Do you know the reason for this exception?

Merry Christmas is always called when it comes to greeting Christmas. Even if someone says ‘Happy Christmas’, someone from the side misunderstands, ‘Not Happy, Mary will be.’ This has been going on for years. But why did ‘Happy’ fall out of the Christmas greetings?

Before answering this question, it should be noted that ‘Happy’ has not been completely dropped before Christmas. "Happy" is still widely used in England before Christmas. Even the Queen of Britain herself said 'Happy Christmas' to wish you a Merry Christmas. That's because, according to the Queen, "Mary" is not a very polite word. Even some self-proclaimed aristocratic families in England still do not use the word 'Mary'. According to them, it is the language of the most barbaric thugs. ‘Happy’ is what a gentleman can use. The same practice is going on in many churches of that country.

Interestingly, the role of the Church of England is also behind this 'Merry Christmas'. In an effort to popularize Christianity among the common people, the clergy have at one time replaced 'Happy' with 'Mary' before Christmas.

In general, ‘Merry Christmas’ is the language of the common people, and ‘Happy Christmas’ has remained in England as a greeting for conservatives. In 1534, however, Bishop John Fisher wrote a letter to Cromwell. It read 'Merry Christmas'.

However, since the beginning of the nineteenth century, Merry Christmas has become popular in many parts of Europe, including England. This practice later spread to America. 'Merry Christmas' is widely written on Christmas cards. That is what has become popular all over the world. However, in the meantime, the message of 'Happy Christmas' has survived among some people.

Thank you everyone.
