Som Tam is a popular Thai salad featuring green papaya and a spicy chile pepper dressing. The multitude of flavors from this salad explode in your mouth—sweet, tart, crunchy, and a touch of spiciness. A healthy and tasty treat for brunch, lunch.
Serves 4-5
- Ingredients:
1 medium green (unripe) papaya, peel and coarsely grate or shred, soak in ice water for 12-15 minutes until they are firmer, drain
5-6 long beans, cut into 2-inch pieces
1/2 cup carrots, sub shredded
1 cup grape tomato, cut into wedges
2 tbsp dried shrimp, rinsed
1/2 cup boiled peeled prawn
3 small cloves garlic, peeled
4-5 whole bird’s eye chillies, depending on degree of bravery
Pinch of coarse salt
2 tbsp fish sauce, to taste
2-3 tbsp shaved palm sugar
2 tbsp fresh lime juice
2 tsp tamarind juice
3 tbsp roasted peanuts
Serving suggestion: sticky rice and BBQ chicken.

Crush garlic, chillies, salt with papaya then add long beans and tomatoes and pound a few times to release juices.
Add palm sugar and pound until sugar starts to dissolve.
Add dried shrimp and peanuts and pound to break the peanuts up slightly.
Add boiled peeled shrimp, fish sauce and lime juice. Use a large spoon, alternate scooping and turning the ingredients and pounding them with the pestle so that everything gets mixed together.
Taste for seasoning.
Sprinkle with peanuts and serve immediately with sticky rice and BBQ chicken!
